I like the different structure of the giveaway here, and I'll be honest, I wouldn't typically post. But since that's the idea, let's start a fun discussion!

I'm a solo gamer, primarily. Last night I tried my luck against the Mechanical Marquise in Root and got my FACE SMASHED. What was the last solo game that you played? Did you win? Was it fun? Would you recommend it?

Excited to hear what everyone says!

I soloed #On Mars after buying it, mostly to help me learn the rules. I like the built-in variety of "difficulty levels" you can attempt as you get better at the game. Needless to say, since it was my first play I did not defeat Lacerda (the Bot's name) on the easiest difficulty level. Having said that…

Did I have fun? Would I recommend it solo? Will I solo it again? YES.

(#On Mars is really giving #Great Western Trail a run for its money as my favorite game of all time.)

New User13 days ago

I'm interested in On Mars. The retail price point scared me away a little bit even though I routinely drop more than that on KS. If it's worth it, though, especially for solo, I'm in!

Unfortunately (for your wallet), I definitely think #On Mars is worth it. (Do bear in mind, I'm very partial to Ian's stunning artwork and graphic design, and I love the theme as well… so those things certainly affect my opinion. But the gameplay is incredible and certainly doesn't take a back seat.)

Watch a solo playthrough and see what you think! It sure is a big, heavy box full of fun! 😄

I played Harbour recently solo. I won and it was enjoyable. Not typically a solo gamer

New User10 days ago

Haven't played Harbour but I've heard good things. Is the solo mode it's own thing or like a beat-your-score type of setup?

Supporter19 days ago

The only solo games I really play are roll and writes. The last two I played were #Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale and #Welcome to.... I played a lot of #Root but not solo like my friend @philryuh has done. Did you play the updated solo or the original? I hear there's a 2.0 or something that makes gameplay a lot more fun for it.

New User19 days ago

The original solo from the Riverfolk expansion. I did a good amount of reading afterward though and it looks like 2.0 is much more balanced (read: easier). I'm also very curious about all this Better Bot Project stuff on BGG, and I ordered the Clockwork Expansion to really get serious.

I can see this game being so much fun with a big group, so if I can simulate that, I think it might really pop.

I haven't played many Roll & Write games but it's a category I'm interested in for sure. I backed Railroad Ink and I'm pretty optimistic about that. I feel like it could be an area that I could maybe use to get my wife to the table, which would be the holy grail for me, haha!

Supporter15 days ago

Clockwork is the way to go :)

Nice!! I've only played using the PnP files but it would be nice if I had the official boards haha. I look forward to hearing an update on your experience with it.

New User13 days ago

I bought the CWE because I wanted to support Leder and because I'm a completionist and want everything in that box, but it does kinda seem like it's redundant. I think all of the bots (which are sourced from the Better Bot Project as is) have been updated since the release, so the PnP files are the most current anyway.

I've been playing with printed copies of the most recent player boards for the bots, and the original ones for myself. Works really well! Each one has a learning curve, of course.

Supporter19 days ago

It's certainly a great thing when I can get my wife to play. After about a year of intermitant games that generally did well and some didn't I figure out what her preferences were and now we can play about once a week! #Gloomhaven ended up being the unlock to get her really hooked ;)

New User18 days ago

I'm pretty sure Gloomhaven would make my wife vomit immediately, so let's just say I envy you there. We do ok with things like Azul every now and again, but that's about as deep as it gets.

More power to you!

On to try Root against the Mechanical Marquise v2. I'm pretty convinced v1 is not winnable except with EXTREME luck. At least playing as the Eyrie, anyway.

Hey, guess what I got for my birthday, guys?!?!  STONE AGE!!!! hahahahaha  Now if I could only get my game mojo back.  I haven't played much since the pandemic hit bc my only playmate is my husband and I have been spending more time at my art table making mail art.

Anyway, if I won, I'm not sure what I would get.  Maybe WIngspan.

Wingspan is a lot like Agricola in my opinion...so don't get Winspan if you didn't like Agricola (unless you REALLY REALLY love birds, haha)

I say that because Agricola has the maximization factor. You have to maximize EVERY single turn, or your opponent will beat you...depending on who you play of course. I played my brother all the time in Agricola, and he has a very analytical mind and the only way to beat him was literally to not make a mistake the whole game, haha :)

Wingspan is the same. I like to think analytically too (I'm a math major in college right now) but I had a headache after playing the game the first time. Don't let this scare you - many people love it. But I just think it's not for everyone!

Supporter15 days ago

It's finally happened!!! Congrats lol

You could buy #Wingspan for $48 right now at Bed Bath and Beyond by signing up for their newsletter and getting a discount. But seeing how patient you've been with #Stone Age, I have a feeling you won't go for it but just in case xD

Excellent! That is very exciting! Hopefully you can carve out some time to get a play in! I have heard good things :)

I kinda forgot what it was like to play games with people, so when I got back to it it was very refreshing, so I highly encourage you to break out of the funk!

That image reminded me that I'd probably invest the money in Pax Pamir. Still haven't played it but I love it for the visual appeal alone already.

Supporter20 days ago

It's a great one and it's suchhhhh a looker :)

Are there games in your collection that you got after getting hooked by the visuals?

I bought Captain Sonar and Colt Express based on the visuals :) The 3D trains and artwork of Colt Express hooked me quick, and the Battleship look of Captain Sonar made me want to get that as well. Of course, the gameplay of those games is what really caused me to buy it, but the visuals are what caught my attention as well!

Right there with you with the TMB funding lol.

Supporter11 days ago

Fun! I'd probably get Champions of Midgard

New User11 days ago

We enjoy playing BoardGames, are top game played is Wingspan.

Nice! Would love to win those $60! :)

So many games to choose from! I'd probably start small with Ecosystem, and then go for a larger game!

#Too Many Bones for sure! Also up there might be #Everdell.

I'd like to get #The 7th Continent as I usually play solo and I love the theme.

I would get #Spirit Island

Supporter11 days ago

Great choice.

I'd use it to grab those Flashpoint datapacks and art sleeves

1830. I'm a tax accountant that works in financial securities trading. I genuinely enjoy the concept of setting par value, making movements within a company, expanding track, and then selling it all and getting out. Im unsure how I'm going to get a new copy in the US though.

Have you played many of those kind of heavy economic games?

I have not.

Good luck, I've not tried one before but they look like brain-melters, although tax accounting would also probably melt my brain XD

Number one on my list right now is Teotihuacan.

Excellent! Have you looked into #Tekhenu: Obelisk of the Sun?

I have looked into that, yes.  It also looks really good.

It is next on my watch list on Youtube. That group of designers does good work.

They also have Marco Polo 2 that just came out. I never played the original, but I'm excited about the new rendition.

That is also on my list! I have heard great things from @philryuh and they talk about that a good amount on Game Brain Podcast!

Still looking to pick up#The Quacks of Quedlinburg. $60 would make that happen immediately.

Highly recommend! It has been a huge win for me!

Supporter20 days ago

If I do end up winning again right now #Stuffed Fables is at the top of my wish list because I think it'd be great to play with the kids.  I'd probably use any leftover from $60 toward #Fort

Yes!#Stuffed Fables is definitely worth it and a ton of fun with kids.

Supporter20 days ago

Glad to hear that.  If I don't ever end up winning another giveaway I'll probably get it as a family gift at Christmas.

New User21 days ago

I'd definitely put it towards either Everdell, Clank! Acquisitions Incorporated, Wingspan, Imperial Assault or Memoir '44...

Supporter19 days ago

Out of those listed I've got #Wingspan in my collection and it's been incredible. It's such a great game to pull out if I've got a group that's starting to get more interested in strategy games since it's realatively easy to teach, has lots of good strategy for me to enjoy, and the components are amazing which is always fun to bring out.

Out of those my recommendation would be #Everdell! It's a favorite in our house :)

Haha, one day you will get #Too Many Bones @philryuh and I imagine on that day you will be a happy man!

Not sure what I'd get. One of my favorite things is to browse my local stores and find something that I didn't know about.

What have been some previously unknown gems you have found and really enjoyed?

I always go for underrated games...Captain Sonar, Honga, Flamme Rouge, Habitats to name a few. Super fun and relatively quick games! Packed with strategy for what they are!

I love Flamme Rouge so much, it is just great fun start to finish. And Captain Sonar is just hilarious

I agree! What I love about them is that they are strategy games that you can play with 8, and even 12 players, and in an hour or less! That is super rare nowadays. I play with a bunch of college students, who aren't always ready to invest gobs of their time playing board games. But if I can say we'll be done in an hour? They're in!

12 players? Can you have 3 teams in Captain Sonar?

But yeah, I can certainly see the appeal of getting to get through something that fast!

#Flamme Rouge and #Honga are so great! Two very solid "everyone-weight" games. 🙂

I like that term...'everyone-weight' haha...yeah, I play with so many different types of people (usually non-heavy-gamers) so I love that everyone-weight category. Those games usually have a bit of strategy, but aren't anything to crazy for 'regular' folks, lol

My favorite random finds are the chameleon and android mainframe. Mainframe, in particular, is a great abstract puzzle game. It plays wildly different from 2 to 4p.

Not seen those before, will give mainframe a look!

Biggest unknown gem to me is Battle for greyport

What made it click for you?

@Courageous Bob. it feels fresh to me.  It has all of the deckbuilding fun, but it isnt the same format as Dominion of Shadowrift, the dice are swingy, but it can be so fun to have that bit of tension in the game.  Everyone plays on everyones turn which I like, and it is hard

Supporter23 days ago

I would probably go for Gamenerdz, not sure which game I would pick.

Already got my Too Many Bones!

Probably sit on it for a hot minute, or perhaps get another Hellboy expansion

@nealkfrank and @philryuh are jealous, haha.

Is #Hellboy: The Board Game that good?

its super promising so far, but I have not gotten to really dive in yet got hit with a bunch of reviews to do

Supporter20 days ago

Yes lol

Now @nealkfrank, I'm thinking...... would it be worth buying #Too Many Bones under Board Game Atlas so that we can cover some content?....... hmmmmmm (before I do that though, I should try reaching out to Chip Theory Games and see if they'd be interested in providing a copy in return for us doing playthrough videos)

I mean, I would be interested in the content. I feel like a lot of the playthroughs online are very polished, not many rules mistakes or learning, so i would love to see how the learning process is for you guys and get a behind the scenes look at it!

Supporter20 days ago

Are you saying that our video will need to be well polished? or that you'd like to see all of the potential fumbling around with the rules and learning the ropes with strategy, etc? xD

Oh no no, I would much prefer seeing you all fumbling around lol. I think it would help the normal person understand if the game is accessible for them! As long as you communicate something like that on the from end it will be ok.

I feel like you guys should pretty much always reach out to publishers first thing if you have any hope that it can make for cool videos

Supporter20 days ago

Yes, definitely! Will be spending most of my day tomorrow reaching out to big publishers like Roxley games and others

That's so fun

As a matter of fact, yes I am!!

Or maybe Clank Legacy, it will be a while before I can play it...but I do want to at some point.

Supporter23 days ago

Awesome! So glad for all the winners and for this community. If I win I would select either#Underwater Cities: New Discoveries or#Aeon's End: Legacy

+1 for Aeons End!

I love that pic!

I think at this point it'd be between #Baseball Highlights: 2045 and #War Chest, depending on how I'm feeling that day, haha. Both of those games look so cool! Could also throw in #Bruxelles 1897 if there was enough leftover.

Supporter23 days ago

Excellent choices my dude.

Haha, thanks! I hope to pick up all three of those by the end of the year. As far as new games go, that's pretty much it as far as "top of the list" games. Beyond that, it's expansions and some games that would be cool to have/play, but are lower priority for me. I've been very blessed to be able to knock out a huge chunk of my wishlist within the last year.

I am rooting for you to get Baseball Highlights! Seeing as baseball starts this week :)))))

FINALLY

Supporter23 days ago

I saw this picture a few months ago. A Korean baseball stadium filled it up with stuffed animals lol

Hahaha that's so fun

lolololol That's awesome! I think more places should do that to fill in seats. :)

Have you seen that some stadiums (stadia?) are selling cardboard cutouts to fans to have them sit in seats at home games? Pretty funny

haha That's awesome. We used to wave gigantic cardboard heads of famous people behind the basketball hoop during college basketball games. They'd hand them out to students as they came in. Always a good time.

Haha that's so fun!

lolololol That's awesome! I think more places should do that to fill in seats. :)

Supporter23 days ago

Would definitely be more friendly than fat dudes drinking beer

And getting it spilled on you...

Tell me about it! There is even a preseason game on tonight, Angels v. Padres at 6:10 pm on FSW that I am for sure gonna try and catch a couple innings of. Live sports are missed.

Freaking Youtube TV dropped FSW so now I have no way to watch the Angels this season unless I go over to my parents. Incidentally, I no longer have Youtube TV.

Dude the worst, I have heard YoutubeTV went from being awesome to being overpriced and not as great...

I still use my parents COX account to watch games lol.

Haha, nice. Yeah Youtube TV was great when I first got it! Then they kept upping the price to add channels I didn't care about (sounds familiar) and removing the ONLY CHANNEL I CARED ABOUT

They get you early on then pull the rug out from under you, not a great business model!
