Recommend.Games now with BGA recommendations

You might have seen my site which offers personalised board game recommendations based on BGG ratings. I've now come around to implementing a similar algorithm for BGA – you can see a preview at

This is a very hacky first version that most likely contains many bugs, and it's not linked from the main site yet, but I wanted to get it into the hands of the users here as early as possible.

While its primary purpose are personalised recommendations, it also gives recommendations for users who haven't rated any games yet, i.e., an overall ranking. According to this, the highest rated game on BGA is... *drumrolls*... Pandemic Legacy.

If you want to see your own recommendations, head over to, type in your BGA user name, and you'll see recommendations based on your ratings. Note that the number of ratings here are still fairly small, so recommendations might not be as meaningful as they could be. Also, the model needs to be trained on the full set of ratings which takes time to scrape and process, so any ratings you do will take time before they show up on

Let me know what you think!

It recommended me Gloomhaven which I already own. The other ones in the list seemed pretty good though and I have a few on my wishlist already.

That was going to be my comment. It recommends things I already own. But yeah, it's spot on for stuff I like :)

I've used the tool in it's original incarnation and quite like it.

One suggestion I would have is to allow toggling on or off expansions.  My #1 pick is an expansion for a game I don't have.

On the other hand it is also recommending games to me that I already have.  Like you said there will be some bugs so no worries.  If I can help by giving you more specific examples send me a message.

Yeah, I didn't handle expansions properly. Generally, we only want to recommend base games, so I'll filter expansions out in the next iteration.

And yes, games you already own aren't really useful recommendations (though a nice validation of the recommendation algorithm) – this was also the first feedback people gave when I launched the BGG version. It's unlikely I can invest the same kind of time into this version, but I'm hopeful Trent might be able to take it from here. :-)

It worked for me. Nice development. It is really cool that you developed this and offer it as a service!
