Support Black Lives Matter with us on June 17

I've mentioned this in an earlier post, but here's the formal announcement.

Since more than a week ago, we placed a black banner on the top of our website and on Board Game Prices to stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and to help raise awareness on this issue. In order to further help the cause, we will be donating 100% of the revenue from your board game purchases on Wednesday, June 17 to the NAACP. So for those of you who have been planning to buy a board game this month, please consider buying it on that day if you'd like to help support the cause. For those who'd like to help but are already tight on budget due to the effects of COVID-19, please partner up with us by sharing this announcement to your friends and family.

To participate you just buy a board game using one of the links on https://www.boardgameprices.com or www.boardgameatlas.com and the revenue we get from the affiliate kickback will be donated! So even people unaware of the event will help contribute as well!

Lastly, there's always the option to bypass all of this and donate directly to the cause to maximize the benefits. If you need any clarifications, please feel free to ask questions. Thank you!

This is noble and awesome. I wish for all of us to take a step back and consider what our actions say about us as citizens and human beings. If we are the silent majority that simply nod and say that we agree with the intent of the protests, what does that actually accomplish? If we silently support but do nothing then we are part of the problem. This problem will only be solved by Frank, real, painful discussion. Things cannot continue as the have been. Making monetary donations is one small way to do something.

Amen.

Also, who's Frank? 😉

Can I still be Garth?

Supporter5 months ago

Frank is a frog that I drew on my driveway with chalk yesterday while playing with my kids.

hahaha That's awesome

It's a great idea, I won't be able to participate but will spread the word!

I wonder if there might be a way to utilise the platform you/we have here to be more supportive long term to the cause? Like ensuring that we highlight the talent of individuals who are Black: either designers or artists or other roles, through the interviews or in reviews that we put up, or games we recommend. And commit to doing so over the long-term, so that as new people come to the site it is both welcoming to ethnic minorities and that everyone is likely to learn about and be exposed to games influenced by the work of Black people (obviously supporting the work of all ethnic minorities also would be great but just right now the focus is and should be on Black individuals)? I don't know how that might play out in practice but would love to see (and will try to do so in my own actions) something like this to try and create change in the board game community as a whole.

I won't be buying any games (already bought two this year so I'm past my limit haha) but I will definitely share! I love that you're doing this. Like Brian said, we can't sit back idly and watch as things unfold. Doing nothing is problematic, so thank you for taking the initiative on this.

Amazing. I am extremely encouraged by your desire to raise awareness and to support the cause.

By the way, how will this work? Are you able to track when a link from here is used to purchase a game?

Owner5 months ago

It'll depend on the retailer since there are different types of tracking we have in place. For Amazon and Ebay we just look at sales for the day since we're hooked directly into their API. For the other stores we've got google analytic tracking and estimate sales data that we'll use to estimate the revenue from each of the other stores and take the appropriate portion from the total month's revenue from those stores so it should be relatively close to the final numbers.

What about buying directly from a developer? Like going through their store? Or is it easier to use a retailer?

Owner5 months ago

It's only based on the links we have on boardgameatlas.com and boardgameprices.com if you purchase through other sites then we wont have the referral code in there and won't get the affiliate kickback from the purchase.

That makes sense, so if the "official website" is listed, then it should be good? Sorry, I am thinking about pre-ordering Too Many Bones and want to make sure the funds go to the cause.

Owner5 months ago

Yes, if it's a link on one of the two sites then it'll count.

Oh dang! I was not expecting that...

Owner5 months ago

My goodness, you're going all in haha

From a quick glance, it seems like Too Many Bones is out of stock on all of the listed stores.

Hey i figured if the funds go to a good cause, might as well go all out! Ya, it is only available to pre-order on the Chip-Theory website. I will pivot then!

Owner5 months ago

I was just surprised and happy seeing you go for the game. If it happens, just know that I'll be anxiously waiting to hear your reports :)

I will for sure let ya know if I can convince my wife that it would be worth the investment lolol.

Owner5 months ago

That's true. You know I was showing my wife pictures of Too Many Bones last night too. My usual... "prepping process" if you will lol

Lolol I have done the same thing...she loves old school turn-based video games and I feel like TMB is a tabletop implementation of that, which is why I think it might work well! She saw me watching a video of a play through and said "That looks cool" without any prompting!

Owner5 months ago

Hmmm I should check out more videos, because I'm not 100% aware of what goes on in TMB. Turn-based games were my jam throughout my PS career so your description is only pushing me further into buying it!

It’s essentially a quest where you have different encounters that lead up to a tyrant (big boss), some of the encounters are non-combat, much of them are combat. The combat is turn based but there is a priority set at the beginning of the encounter, any new enemy that comes in is placed at the bottom of the priority list. You then roll specific dice based on your stats and what you have available. Pretty cool!

Owner5 months ago

Cool, will look into it more. I always love the idea of difficult boss battles where you're dwindling down their health (while yours are too)

You know, I feel like we went through a phase where several of us jumped on board and bought #Root. I think you and I can start a revolution of people getting onto Chip Theory games (TMB, at least) haha

Robs Gaming Table has some pretty decent playthroughs that show the game off well!

Lol, we definitely did have a good couple weeks where Root was the only game talked about! TMB may not be quite as accessible...But we can try!!

Awesome. I'll be ready!

@philryuh you guys should post about this on your instagram! I don't use it, but my wife does, and she would probably re-share it (I'm assuming that's a thing).

Sweet! Thank you

Here's an image I put together to promote this post. It features many of the games created by those highlighted in this link (by Elizabeth Hargrave, designer of #Wingspan)https://www.elizhargrave.com/black-voices-in-board-games.
