What are the Best Scary Board Games for Halloween?

It is that time of the year again. The time when someone has to put up the eneviable "What are the best board games for Halloween" post. So lets do it. What are the top games? Any new titles taking over from some of the staples? I will start with a few of my go tos - #Eldritch Horror and #Betrayal at House on the Hill - because I like more of a well written narrative to go with the holiday. Is there a difference between best horror game and best Halloween game or are those interchangeable?

I don't necessarily think that "horror" and "Halloween" are interchangeable, because a lot of Halloween-related stuff can lean toward being more cute and family-friendly, where horror definitely doesn't. I don't get into Halloween or horror stuff much in general, but I highly recommend #Horrified! It's got the classic Universal Pictures monsters, and is an excellent family-friendly co-op game. It's simple enough for most people to play, but challenging enough for gamers and non-gamers to enjoy equally. I'm sure that #Horrified: American Monsters is similar in that way.

I have been wanting to check out American Monsters. If you never played either and you could only have #Horrified or #Horrified: American Monsters in existance. Which would you choose?

Unfortunately I haven't played American Monsters yet!

Love Horrified and also still need to play American Monsters. Good one!

Not only is he one of my favorite horror characters, but they made a fantastic game about his wrath that I will play any day of the week - #Fury of Dracula (Third and Fourth Editions). It is so fitting that he stalks his prey with hidden movement and you need to stay one step ahead to survive.

Never played this one but it seems perfect for this question!

I second this reccomendation. There is a chance you can get really screwed or really lucky with where Dracula is but the cat and mouse of it is a ton of fun.

I am a big Arkham Horror fan, especially if you are looking for something cooperative to play together. But the question for the group - which do you like better #Arkham Horror or #Arkham Horror: The Card Game?

I have not played the card game version but it looks like I will have to now. A classic and iconic choice for the Halloween question.

Original! I get more into it with the board and everything.

Card Game, absolutely!

I will agree with on this one - 'horror' and 'Halloween' are not mutually exclusive in my opinion.  I don't get into the horror side of Halloween and haven't played any horror themed games, although #Horrified: American Monsters does sound very interesting to me. My personal favorite for Halloween game is #Disney: The Haunted Mansion - Call of the Spirits Game. Add the music from the ride in the background (thank my son for that), the occasional well-timed power outage due to a storm, pull out the flashlights, lanterns, and candles, and you have an unforgettable evening (regardless of whether that happens in February or October)!

I think you guys are right. Horror has its place for some but it is much bigger than that. I might freak out if the power unexpectadly went out on a stormy Halloween night!

+1 for #Betrayal at House on the Hill, I know it is an old one, but I still have not been through all the scenarios and they are all so well written. You can really feel it. And for Halloween, what better setting than a haunted house!

I know right! I wouldn't say ALL the scenarios are well written but definely most are.

Funny that this is another forum post about them running a photo contest because I love the Libelud game #Mysterium. I just got #Mysterium Park and are excited to try that out this holiday!

I equate halloween with horror movie marathons so they are interchangable for me. I could see Halloween being broader. More about the fall and a little lighter, witches instead of murders, especially if kids are involved. I guess it depends on the person.

+1 for #Mysterium and #Fury of Dracula (Third and Fourth Editions)

Same. Not horror but spooky. A great choice!

I absolutely hate horror movies but I love Halloween so I feel like there is definetly a big difference 😁

Definetly my favorite zombie game and I love the semi-coop type of cooperation.

I think one of the more interesting board games with a near Halloween theme would be Bedeville Carnival. Link to upcoming campaign Bedeville Carnival
