Dune Imperium First Look!

Some info has surfaced on the Dire Wolf website, along with some images!

Looks like there is a chance to ask some questions of the developers in this thread on BGG as well (no questions as of the time of this post): https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2505822/dune-imperium-first-look

I think over all this looks like a game I will be interested in. They are developing a solo mode, I am going to be very curious to see how that plays out. I think the art is ok, maybe a bit better than ok, but it is certainly better than using movie stills would be. I am really curious what this game will feel like to play. Will it feel assymetrical in the way that the IP demands, or will it be a fairly pasted on theme?

So, I am very curious on the price as well. And, unless the price is very cheap indeed, I won't rush out to buy it right away. But, I will certainly watch for reports as it comes out and hits peoples tables.

I'm with you. I'm definitely interested. Not 100% sold on it yet since we don't know a ton about the gameplay, but who am I kidding? I'm probably going to buy it no matter what because it's Dune.

Also I posted a question about asymmetry on the thread, I'll tag you here if they respond to it.

The original game currently still appeals more than this at the moment but will be interested to see how it develops.

So, are you David L. I saw that name and I wondered if it was you?

Yep

Some initial impressions from myself on the images shown:

  • It looks like the art is based on the new Villenueve movie
  • There's a round step called "Makers"...drool
  • It'd be cool if the sandworm token was a meeple or something cooler than a cardboard token :/

Some details learned from the thread:

  • solo mode
  • 1-4 players
  • 1-2 hours
  • The art is "inspired by the film, and we get to use character likenesses, but there are also images in the game not based on film imagery and characters in the game who appear in the books (who don't appear in the films)." -Scarlatch on BGG
  • "It's not particularly complex, not light either - it plays pretty smooth with some nice depth to it." -Scarlatch on BGG
  • On whether or not there are asymmetric elements: "A bit, you can see it in the revealed leader cards in the contents image."

they replied about asymmetry - copied their response here ^

Cool, thanks.

That looks cool, and I almost wish the logos weren't on the cover, especially Direwolf's. It seems like the type of cover that will look even better in person, if the space area has a nice hint of deep purple to it. Also, given the more accessible look of the game and its components, I feel like this could sell really well if they ride the wave of the movie's release.

Yeah I'm looking forward to the level of accessibility and hopefully the ease of getting it to the table compared to the other game.

Also, hint of Deep Purple: Want To Succeed More Often? Take A Cue From Deep Purple

I am very much with you in regards to the meeple versus token deal wiith the sandworm.

Looks like a potential DIY upgrade to me:)

I am sure that there will be a number of 3d printed mini's available on etsy for that.

Yeah! I've seen some pretty cool 3D printed worms for the other game, could print up one of those and use it here if you wanted.

To me this is a cool but not amazing box cover. Any thoughts?

I like the cover, but it's not as striking as the original Dune cover. Adore the font, though.

Yeah man I love the cover for 2019 #Dune. This one is cool but likely not one I'll feel like needs to be on display.

Supporter31 days ago

I like the font, but I do feel like it will feel a bit dated fairly quickly.

Odd, I don't see it.

Supporter31 days ago

I could be wrong, But, I feel like heavily stylized fonts, at least to me, look dated pretty quickly. I do think I am a bit of font snob, and I tend to prefer much more classical fonts, or failing that something that is uniquely useful like the farily new Milo font. This is highly stylized in a way that looks really good now. But let us not forget that people made the stylistic choices they made in the 90s because they thought they looked good.

I think the box cover is good, maybe even very good. But it I don't think that it is great. I do wonder how final that cover is.

Edit: I do love the purple tones especially in the upper left hand corner of the box. That looks really really nice.

I suppose they could keep working on the cover, but I'm guessing it's pretty close to final, given that the movie supposedly comes out in December, and they'll surely want to release this close to then since it's tied in with the movie.

Design diary #1: https://direwolfdigital.com/news/dune-imperium-designer-diary-1-beginnings/

They took more questions on this thread:

  • "Won't be released via kickstarter, but we will have a direct pre-order as well as a general release to stores." - Scarlatch
  • I asked about meanness and got this response from Scarlatch:
"There's obviously some bias here, but I was a little surprised to find that my wife and kids love it (and talk about it away from the table). It's slightly heavier than Clank! (and the theme and content is clearly not light and whimsical) and obviously worker placement has some inherent 'gotchya' (you took my spot!), but in a way that we find fun to roll with. There are also surprises (coming up in the next design article) and some combat battling with winners and losers, but overall it feels tense without feeling mean (to us, anyway)."

I like the resource cylinders that presumably represent more the taller they are. Not sure if they will be practical but look cool at least.

I think those are just stacks

Supporter31 days ago

Looks really nice, and I'm so so so glad they didn't use movie stills for the art.

OMG yes. That would probably be a deal breaker for me

So far, it looks to be more accessible than the other #Dune, which is appealing. Have a hard time getting that one to the table. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

Yep, same.
