I'm a late adopter when it comes to anything on the tech front. And to this day, I only have a vague idea of Discord's full potential.

Well, Board Game Atlas is finally on Discord and we want to use it to connect with all of you! No idea how we'll be using it but I'm looking forward to the fun we'll have on there 😀

With that in mind, I wanted to ask:

  • Are you on Discord? Which servers have you joined so far? Are there ones you've considered joining?
  • What do you like/dislike about the platform?
  • What would you like to see from us now that we're on Discord?

First, I am on Discord and BGA will be my 5th Board Game Discord group.  Although I really only use two of them at the moment so I just dumped a few.

I love Discord as a way to play/find players for games on TTS.  That's pretty much the only thing I use it for.

I am excited of the possibility of some live conversation instead of just forum posts.  I also hope (thinking of my recent post) that it may be used to easliy set up some TTS game time with BGA peeps.

Really excited!

I just figured out Discord and saw that I'm behind on the discussions lol. Great to see you all outside of the forum too. I couldn't remember your username but I'm guessing it's slapsgiving14 based on the mention of Root and Pax Pamir :)

You know, we should have a Root tournament some day. Or any game, really. The winner wins a game :)

I'll take on that challenge!

I'm on zero discord servers.... Tell me why I should be on this one, or any other.... I really don't even feel like I have a good feel for what a discord server is.

It's kind of like a permanent zoom call (or multiple tailored zoom calls) that people on the server can join and leave (as long as they have permission) at will. So I mostly use it for playing D&D with a group of friends: it's the same people each week so no need to send out Zoom links and it is designed to be used while video gaming so it does a good job of being non-intrusive and using up minimum WiFi. You can also set up multiple group chats that remain between calls so you can easily have ongoing conversation or share things during the games. It's a really well put together program in my opinion

Well, so far, I like that we can keep in touch with everyone in the forum without the pressure of making a formal post :) (I mean, I still encourage everyone to do it, but it's been a nice casual chat there). And it'll be easy for anyone to report bugs, ask questions, bounce around ideas and share about what's coming up next in the community, etc. And if you're like who randomly texts me picture of a game that he played, you can both do that there lol

But you never respond when I send you those random pictures!

My bad :p

I always check it, go 😮, then forget to respond back later

What's Discord?

Does that anwer the question?

And I'm of the same mind as .  I'm on Instagram, but still ask my teenage son how do anything other than post a simple post.

Same as me then! Well, I at least got to use it once :)

I did zero social media until I got on Board Game Atlas. It took a lot of googling 😂

Love it! I'm personally in quite a few. Several for specific games/publishers, and a few for specific content creators. I haven't been super active in any of them to this point, but I'm open to it.

There was no option for 30+ :-P

Technically, I'm on several. But most of them are muted and I only use them for tech support (Wingspan, Dire Wolf).

The only server I really use is the one I set up for my local gaming group. We use it to talk during our weekly online game nights, as well as to post gaming news and questions during the week.

Discord is great for voice chat, but pretty terrible as a message board. The streaming capabilities are pretty neat, especially for someone like me who is never going to get into it in a serious way. It's an easy way to share a screen without any additional software.

I am on 3 of them, and now a 4th!  But I am a bit more old school and tend to forget to go on them.

I only have it on my PC and forget to load it up half the time.  So if you message me on the BGA discord and I don't reply right away don't take it as an insult. :)

This sounds like a question for - I hear he's on quite a few ;P

Personally, I'm "on" 2 but active in 0. My meetup group made one just before the pandemic hit just to keep everyone in the loop as far as meetups go and to be able to chat whenever about whatever. I was using it a bit then to jump into conversations here and there. Then of course it became used for setting up online play chat rooms and such - none of which I've participated in.

The other I'm in is for the Board Game Barrage podcast, which I joined primarily to participate in their Ghost Turkey exchange. I've said a few things on there, mostly asking for opinions when I couldn't find any through searching for the game I had questions about.

I am on one I use for playing board games with my university friends and another I joined in order to play test #Fjordar. I only use the former now. I actually find discord really useful for chatting to a consistent group, I do keep trying to get my local board game group to use it rather than zoom but some of them are unwilling to try out new things so was a bit of a non-starter.

I think using it to organise games within the BGA community or hosting the Q&A type events could be really fun.

It is interesting, there are so many different Discords out there from different people and they all have different things going on.

I like that you can find interesting live conversations. It is also what I use for communication during online gameplay.

I ended my social network augmentations several years ago. I use YouTube and begrudingly Facebook Messenger. Don't use Twitter, Twitch, Reddit, Instagram, TikTok or Discord. I know what they are but they just aren't appealing to me. I rather spend time on thematic sites like BGA or IMDB than on those other services.

It is a great place to find key figures related to any topic I could want to find more information about. If I have a questions about a game and that game or its publisher, I know there is probably a staff member I can ask questions and get feedback from.
