Is this rated by personal preference or by most highly rated at a particular player count or...?

The goal for all lists is to be objective and take many different sources and opinions to put forth the best information. That being said, we are not the news so personal opinions are always going to play into the lists. We are always open to revising all lists based on the discussions that come with their release.

For these, we specifically looked at the best games for that player count. Something maybe for 3 - 5, bad at 3, mediocre at 5, but fantastic at 4.

Wow my question sounded really negative now that I read it. I was more curious because it’s a great list! Hope I didn’t put you on the defensive there

Haha, You are always so positive James, I do not think that is possible.

Hahaha! Thanks :)

Fun list! I'm just curious--is there a particular reason that Atlantis Rising didn't make the cut for the 6 player count? It makes sense why it's on the 7 player list since it's an unusually high count for a Pandemic-esque board game, but I was wondering since there's quite a bit of overlap between the two counts.

Very fair and noted. The pool of games for 7 players is much lighter is the short answer so it is easier to make it. Yes there is much overlap but it didn't quite make the cut. Happy to discuss more not in writing otherwise I would have to write several paragraphs to discuss all the different things that were thought about.

At the end of the day, it is a fantastic game were glad it at least got to represent on the 7 player list!

I love #Village Pillage at 4-6 players, but it's not popular, so I can see why it's not on the list. It plays quickly, simultaneous turns, so more players don't slow down the game, beautiful artwork, and plays a fun mix of rock paper scissors and the prisoners dilemma.

#Sidereal Confluence is much better known (a new edition is coming soon) and NEEDS to be on this list. Maybe it can take the 8 players spot?

Well made and noted suggestions. We will keep this in mind when we are thinking about future revisions.

I have heard mixed reviews on Tainted Grail.  I'd like to play it but folks seem up and down on that one.  Not a bad list overall but Paladins of the West Kingdom (2-4), Architects of the West Kingdom (2-5), Root (1-5), Spirit Island (1-4), Everdell (1-4), Castles of Mad King Ludwig (1-4), Heaven & Ale (2-4), Anachrony (2-4), PARKS (1-5), & Clans of Caledonia all seem to be missing which I would classify all as fantastic.  Oh, Marvel Champions as well.

Not having #Spirit Island on the one or two player list seems like a big oversite.

I think that #Dominion: Second Edition is markedly better at 2 than at any other player count.

#Puerto Rico I think is markedly better at 4 than at any other player count, though I would rather play it with 5 than with 3.

I recently got #Spirit Island and it quickly became one of my favourite games, especially for its solo play. I can see it not being to everybody's liking, but it should at least be on the list. And the theme is so cool!

It is just so so good.

I agree on #Spirit Island and didn't think about #Dominion: Second Edition but agree it should be on there as well.  I'd probably #Orléans.  Some might think #Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale deserves a place on this list.

Out of all the feedback received, SPIRIT ISLAND is one of the biggest and frankly the most right. It is certainly going to gain some ranks across the board in the second edition. Cartographers has some great representation across the lists and yes Orleans could use some more. Thank you all!!

#Dune is a personal favorite at 6 players, but I understand why it's not nearer the top.

One that is great at 2 and 3, and 4 too (depending on how AP-prone the players are) is #Everdell. One of the expansions allows for up to 6 players, but that just seems crazy to me.

Interesting that #Res Arcana is on there for 2 players! That's a game I'm really interested in trying, but scared to actually purchase, since I don't really know if my wife will like it. Seems like it might be a bit too tight for her liking.

Very much agree on #Everdell and think it works great at 2-4 players and my family loves it.  I can't believe that one missed the list.

Top 50 on BGG too! Seems like maybe no one at BoardGameHalv has had the opportunity to play this yet.

Everdell is very much in the mix and you are right that it feels strangely absent. Thanks for the feedback!

I will be honest that for me personally the box, art and style turned me off of Res Arcana a bit, it felt like a style that I had no interest in. but it is very fun and a highly recommend it

Good notes across the board, we will see what the future holds.

Is there a particular definition of 'best' that you ascribe to? For example: Gives the most consistent enjoyment to the biggest number of people (but maybe not so many people's favourite but universally enjoyed) or Mostly likely to be someone's favourite game (but maybe much further down someone else's list) or some other strict definition.

Or is it more of an undefinable term for you, that many things feed into and is therefore a bit more of a gut feeling?
