Full sized games in small boxes

Supporter

I have been falling deep into the hole of Pax games, I don't have any, nor have I played any. I think that will change this year. One of the things that intrigue me is that they have big, full sized game experiences in teeny tiny boxes. For instance, #Pax Emancipation is a weight 4.49 on BGG, has a 60-120 minute play time, and comes in a 5x5x2 inch box.

As I thought about my tastes, and needs, I realized I love the idea of big games in small boxes. For instance, #Innovation is a full game in a tiny box, same with #Impulse Card Game......

So, what do you think of when you think of big "feature" games in small boxes? I realize that the Garphill trillogies would fit this. They all have a 9x9 inch box. What can you think of that is even smaller?

#Bios: Genesis has the same box size as the Pax games and is quite complex.

#Leaving Earth has a pretty small box, and is pretty deep.

#Maximum Apocalypse has a tiny box that's sort of spoiled by #Maximum Apocalypse: Legendary Edition.

#Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture is a fun little game, that doesn't take up much space, plays fast, and has a nice table presence.

#Leaving Earth looks so good, but I feel like I have so many space games that I shouldn't get it. Change my mind?

How many of your space games are at least loosely science based?

Also thanks for entertaining this :)

I've got #On Mars which tries to hint at the oxygen>life cycle, #Kepler-3042, #Terraforming Mars, and #Gaia Project, plus a couple games based on the Apollo Missions that are both kinda sciency.

All my other space games are just space exploration or battle I suppose.

Worth it?

I haven't played Leaving earth. I would say that it is probably worth it if you are into solo play.

In my mind scientific sci fi and other fantastic sci fi are two different genres.I don't have many of either ones. But, in my mind whether or not it will be worth it depends on which sort of sci-fi you tend to prefer.

Have you watched J from 3 Minute Board Games' video on it? Leaving Earth in about 3 minutes

Those are ones I hadn't considered before. Thanks.

#Maximum Apocalypse is probably the easiest of the three to get. And perhaps the most fun. It's a neat little hand management exploration game.

#Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture is one that J from three minute board games recommended. I ordered it directly from their site. It slightly reminds me of #Mottainai

#Mottainai is another of Carl Chuduk's tiny but complex games. Difficult to explain and kind of hard to get to the table though.

I really want to try this one, #Glory To Rome is a grail game of mine, and I understand that #Mottainai is a bit of a retheme of that.

#Town Builder: Coevorden has some similarities to Glory to Rome in the way things are built, and #Tybor the Builder is somehow a cross between something like 7 Wonders and GtR/Mottainai. Both worth looking at.

That is interesting. I know about both of those games, but have mostly ignored them. Partly because I can't say "Coevorden."

In my head it rhymes with cohort... now that you say that, I feel like I should ask a European friend and find out.

I never thought of it that way.

#Clans of Caledonia is 8.8x12.2x2 so it's on the small side as well, and there's plenty game in that one

Supporter15 months ago

Have you managed to try that one yet?

Owner15 months ago

It should arrive on Friday! I just heard about the small box size from one of the review videos

Yay for Friday....

#The Estates comes to mind, 10x10x2. Not as heavy rules wise, but the strategy and interaction of the game seems complex.

As someone who's played this, yes, it's a game that will make an evil person giddy thinking about the possibilities! I like the game but it's one I would definitely avoid playing with friends who can't take meanness

Supporter15 months ago

I didn't know you had played it.

Lol, yes you cannot take the game too seriously!

Supporter15 months ago

That's true of most games.

Supporter15 months ago

I love the idea of how mean you can be in this game.

I have heard that it can be a real slugfest!

Supporter15 months ago

I've heard it can be so mean that the winner sometimes ends up with negative points.

HA! Well at least everyone is in the same boat at that point! #Pixie Queen is like that too...except the game is the one that is mean to you...

Supporter15 months ago

huh... Never even heard of that game, I am looking it up now...
