Full sized games in small boxes

I have been falling deep into the hole of Pax games, I don't have any, nor have I played any. I think that will change this year. One of the things that intrigue me is that they have big, full sized game experiences in teeny tiny boxes. For instance, #Pax Emancipation is a weight 4.49 on BGG, has a 60-120 minute play time, and comes in a 5x5x2 inch box.

As I thought about my tastes, and needs, I realized I love the idea of big games in small boxes. For instance, #Innovation is a full game in a tiny box, same with #Impulse Card Game......

So, what do you think of when you think of big "feature" games in small boxes? I realize that the Garphill trillogies would fit this. They all have a 9x9 inch box. What can you think of that is even smaller?

#Mottainai is another of Carl Chuduk's tiny but complex games. Difficult to explain and kind of hard to get to the table though.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I really want to try this one, #Glory To Rome is a grail game of mine, and I understand that #Mottainai is a bit of a retheme of that.

indigopotter Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

#Town Builder: Coevorden has some similarities to Glory to Rome in the way things are built, and #Tybor the Builder is somehow a cross between something like 7 Wonders and GtR/Mottainai. Both worth looking at.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

That is interesting. I know about both of those games, but have mostly ignored them. Partly because I can't say "Coevorden."

indigopotter Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

In my head it rhymes with cohort... now that you say that, I feel like I should ask a European friend and find out.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

I never thought of it that way.

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

#Clans of Caledonia is 8.8x12.2x2 so it's on the small side as well, and there's plenty game in that one

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Have you managed to try that one yet?

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

It should arrive on Friday! I just heard about the small box size from one of the review videos

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yay for Friday....

nealkfrank 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

#The Estates comes to mind, 10x10x2. Not as heavy rules wise, but the strategy and interaction of the game seems complex.

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

As someone who's played this, yes, it's a game that will make an evil person giddy thinking about the possibilities! I like the game but it's one I would definitely avoid playing with friends who can't take meanness

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I didn't know you had played it.

nealkfrank 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Lol, yes you cannot take the game too seriously!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

That's true of most games.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I love the idea of how mean you can be in this game.

nealkfrank 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have heard that it can be a real slugfest!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I've heard it can be so mean that the winner sometimes ends up with negative points.

nealkfrank 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

HA! Well at least everyone is in the same boat at that point! #Pixie Queen is like that too...except the game is the one that is mean to you...

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

huh... Never even heard of that game, I am looking it up now...

nealkfrank 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

It is a worker placement game, probably not a small box. But you are working to please the pixie queen and if you do not do enough you get lashings (negative points). It is an interesting concept though!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

it looks interesting. But, the theme is not for me.

nealkfrank 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Oh ya, I am much more interested in the Estates for a mean game.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Me too.

#7 Wonders Duel 100%

This is a small box - same size as #Lost Cities I believe - but it is a full sized game for sure...both in table space and in gameplay. Add the #7 Wonders Duel: Pantheon expansion and you've got even more.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I do think I would like this one.

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

It's hard to find a better value in terms of game per dollar, as well.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

That's nice.

You mostly play out with your wife?

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I've actually only played this one once with her. She didn't like the direct confrontation of this one, but she said she'd be willing to try it again as I think she's become more open to game since she first tried it.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I wonder how much my wife would like the confrontational aspect of this one?

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I don't feel that it's that much, honestly. I definitely want my wife to try it again. Maybe watch a playthrough of it to try to gauge it for your wife?

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have watched playthroughs, and I feel like she would either love or hate it.

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Haha, been there. Tough spot.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Hey, at least she likes playing some games with me, even if she is not as much of one for the nice mean ones.

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yep I'm super appreciative that my wife will play games at all with me. Heck I'm not always up for a mean/confrontational game myself.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

amen. I feel very blessed.

nealkfrank 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

This is a good suggestion, not as heavy as any PAX game but it is solid.

Skurvy5 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Paladins is a Perfect example. There is so much game in that small box. It’s incredible.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

You've been playing it a lot solo haven't you?

You should post a list of your top five solo games.

BenjaminK 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I'd love to see your top solo games!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Are you saying that to me? Or are you reinforcing my plea for @Skurvy5 to post his?

BenjaminK 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Reinforcing your plea to @Skurvy5, mostly... But I'd love to see yours as well! I always like hearing what people like for solo games.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Gotcha. I'll post mine.

BenjaminK 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Sweeeet.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

it is up

BenjaminK 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Thee Tiny Epic games do this nicely. Not as deep as Pax Emancipation, but still great games, many of which take an hour or more to play (despite what the box claims). They also have an Ultra Tiny Epic line, with Galaxies and Kingdoms. Those boxes are the size of a box of playing cards but still contain the entire game. I like them a lot. You could say the Ultra Tiny Epic games are the feature games in a small box haha

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I really need to try them.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

To be clear. I tried one, I think it was #Tiny Epic Western. I didn't particularly enjoy that one.

BenjaminK 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yeeaaaahhhh...Western is kind of known for being a hot mess. It's at the bottom of my tiny epic rankings for sure.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

That is what I hear. But, it still makes me reluctant to take a leap on another one.

BenjaminK 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I can definitely understand that. Galaxies is heralded as the best of the series, and is my favorite as well. That's what I always recommend right out of the gate.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I'll need to try it.

BenjaminK 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yes indeed.

Skurvy5 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Gloomhaven. No doubt.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Now, why didn't I think of that?? Great choice!!

Lol

Skurvy5 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Lol.

WadeB1977 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I like the idea of the small box games as well due to them not taking up much space on my shelves.  The down side can be increased setup time if the box is storage efficient.  I like boxes that are built for pulling pieces out to play. (i.e PARKS)

nealkfrank 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

PARKS box is excellent, small and concise with a solid insert. Big fan.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

You know the size offhand?

nealkfrank 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

8.5x8.5x2.8

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Really, I thought it was a rectangle, interesting.

nealkfrank 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

It is a square! Probably one of the best boxes I have in my collection.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I do not know why I thought it was rectangular.

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

...technically...a square is also a rectangle

dodges stuff being thrown at me and runs away

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

And here I was hoping nobody had caught my goof.

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Lol

Not the pedant you deserve, but the pedant you need right now.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Thanks so much for being there for me. Lol.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

That is a good reminder that sometimes small boxes lack storage solutions and/or have small components that make setup difficult.
