Have you ever had one game completely replace another?

Curious if any of you have ever had a game you liked that was completely replaced by something else. I'm not taking about a straight retheme or a second edition of something else. I personally can't think of any at the moment. But some that I've heard are :

War of the Ring replaced by Battle of the five armies.

Catan replaced by Machi Koro or Space Base.

Splendor replaced by Century: Eastern wonders...

Notice that these share some mechanics, sometimes. But mostly people get the same feeling from games that are doing the replacing plus something they like better.

This almost happened to me. I had Viticulture EE and just played Architects of the West Kingdom for the first time. I was really lukewarm on Viticulture and after playing Architects I was ready to sell Viticulture. Then my friend bought me the Tuscany EE expansion and it made Viticulture into a game I desire to play now.

So close, but no cigar.

Glad you got Tuscany and love it now!  Since we all know Viticulture is one of my favorite games.

That does sound close.

Everyone says that about Tuscany. I might have to get it to give it a shot.

Actually I haven’t had that happen yet.

I haven't played enough or own enough to see this happen, except for one--Welcome to... replaced Railroad Ink: Deep Blue Edition for me and my wife. The similarities are the quick play time, relative simplicity, and the "roll & write" genre. We both prefer playing Welcome To since the theme is more fun/relatable and there's more variation in strategy.

I haven’t had this happen yet. Though catan and space base have a couple similar mechanics they are different enough for me to still have the desire to play them.

I haven't had that happen to me yet but I'm sure it will eventually.

I just don’t have enough games yet to replace any yet.

Same here.

I’m at approx 90 games in the collection and I still feel like I have few games that are “the same”

Supporter16 months ago

Which of your games feel the same?

Supporter16 months ago

Oh that was a mistype. I meant to say that none of mine feel the same.

Supporter16 months ago

Oh that makes more sense with what you had said earlier.

Sure does lol
