We just ended up playing it at 3 players...The only substitute I can think of would be a tiny weeble toy (if they make them).

Coins! Like quarters or dimes.

I feel like I'll have to get accustomed to using coins a lot once my son starts wanting to play with everything (10 months old now)

I usually use checkers, chess pieces, or dice to replace things temporarily since I have a set on display on one of my tables.

Not weird but a nickle for in Pandemic. 3D printer I think has put an end to stand in pieces.

Is it fairly quick to print a simple design on the spot? I've never used one or seen how it's used at all, so just curious. Do you have to model it in 3D using some sort of software?

Not on the spot but depending on the piece if you are missing something you could print it our while playing another game.
