Do you buy all the Wild West games? Maybe it's Spaceships and Sci fi, or maybe its Zombies.... What them in a game, makes you want to buy it almost immediately.

I also like anything that puts an interesting twist a theme, And is fun to play. Like Gladius (betting on fights instead of competing in them Yourself), and Bargain Quest (selling gear to adventurers).

Ohhh that's a good one. I always like those kind of twists. Maybe something like NPC's turning against the players would be fun if there's a lot of gaming humor/culture references involved.

Unusual themes really interest me.
Wingspan, The Gallerist, Scythe, Viticulture: Essential Edition, T.I.M.E. Stories
I still enjoy typical fantasy, zombie, sci-fi games, but they have to work a lot harder to get my attention.

Anything where I get to run a large estate or an empire. I don't care if it's galactic, fantasy, or historical, let me try to run the world and I'll dig in.
Star Wars, I'm going to play it
Sci-fi or Pirates, I'll take a look
History, ugh, no thanks

Star Wars, Space 4X, Roman history.
You know, I really can't think of a particular theme that's irresistible. There are themes I typically avoid but besides that, I tend to be more influenced by whether the art is good or bad.
Themes I typically avoid/not attracted to:
Oh? This actually helped me understand what sort of themes I tend to favor:
This is where our tastes diverge. I love SciFi.
Sci-fi movies I enjoy a lot. But they know how to sell it. When it comes to board games, I just haven't found the right one for me that seems compelling enough in its aesthetic + story/premise that's not tacked on. Which is a shame, because I get fascinated by a lot of world-building that happens in sci-fi. Now to talk about just the art side of things, I do think that it takes a more skilled artist to pull it off well because you're needing to make something believable, yet stretching the imagination at the same time. I feel like most sub-par artists just throw in cliched sci-fi elements and it ends up looking "tacky" for my tastes. If there are sci-fi games illustrated by Kwanchai Moriya, Vincent Dutrait, Kyle Ferrin, Mihajlo, etc, I'm sure that will get my interest more. But many of them aren't, and since art tends to be the first barrier to getting my interest, I just end up turning to plenty of other games out there with theme that I'm naturally attracted to (even if it doesn't look as great) and has solid mechanics. Anachrony is one example of a game that managed to get my interest because it has a lot going for it. This actually makes me curious what my wife's preferences are when it comes to themes in board games.
Check out #Empires of the Void II and let me know if that art matches what you are looking for.
I've seen this game mentioned by a number of people here but never bothered to take a look until now! Looks great, and since Ryan's illustrations tend to be on the loose side, it's a good call that there was another illustrator hired to do the more complicated/polished/epic scenes. If anything, I'm interested since he has a good track record in producing story driven games.
Edit: Added to the wishlist to keep it on my radar :D
It’s a really good game.

Love this thought.... I tend to agree with you.....

You have a carefully curated taste Phil, I like it. A lot of the things you avoid people flock to and I think you value uniqueness with your games!
It's nice to be picky so that it saves money! xD
Way to be positive about it lol. I am forced to be picky because of space allotment...
I agree, picky can be good... but be open to new experiences as well.

I am very interested in:
More games in the #scythe universe. Please @jameystegmaier. I believe you could pull it off.
I like strong historical themes. But I don't really have games like that.

Thanks! I'm considering one. :)
This would be amazing! Make it happen!
That's a great first step. Just don't let it stop there....

Dragons, dinosaurs, and Star Wars. Of course, I still don't buy every single one, although I would like to (for the most part).
10-year old boy starter kit right there.
That sums up my interests rather well haha

Do you have a favorite dinosaur game? I would love to try #Apex Theropod Deck-Building Game, but it's pretty pricey as far as I can tell.
Yeah, I'd love to try Apex as well. Looks great! I really enjoy #Dinosaur Island. It plays the Jurassic Park theme well without needing the IP haha I backed #Tiny Epic Dinosaurs and expect it to be good. I also want to try #DinoGenics. I love dinosaur themes, but I really haven't played many of them. But I still get excited for them haha
Haha, dinosaurs are just plain cool.
That's one thing I've never grown out of haha
