Do you think you will self-publish another game having learnt all these things or will you instead try to go through a publisher to save you the headache?

Me personally, I got into this business of self-publishing because this is exactly what I want to be doing. Game design for me is great, but my strengths are really more on the business side. I am going to ask Jon and see what they say. Curious to see their answer, though I bet a lot of it will depend on their experience with Kickstarter this July.

Also, do you worry that by having to think more with a more business-savvy head on (choosing components and therefore maybe mechanics based in cost, making a game based in a sellable pitch rather than a game that excites you) that your designs may suffer as a result?

They can suffer, but I personally have had business moments with my current design that have lead me to better answers. An example is we cut down on the number and variety of tokens in the game. It not only help cut the cost, but it helped to make the rules easier and decluttered the board. It did decrease complexity and choices a bit but the upsides were so big, it ended up helping the game quite a bit.

In the end though, you have to be careful. Those business considerations are important but they can inhibit the game. Now, that can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the situation and the game.

BOX THICKNESS! What is that? haha!

LOL. It's funny but it is also the truth when it comes to developing a board game.

First, I liked how personal the interview was. I've read interviews like this that were stiff. But it was just fascinating hearing all of the little details that go into game publishing and production which are totally behind the scenes and that I typically overlook as a consumer.

Awesome! I am glad you enjoyed it. We are going to try to keep doing things like this if people are interested. So far, it seems like they are. We have had feedback from a few different places so good to know!
