Do you play any board game apps

In The interview with Jamey Stegmaier they touched on apps. Which ones do you play and why? To get more gaming in? To perfect strategy? To learn rules? Just for fun?

I also really like Renegade Game's app (Gamelyn has one for Hero's of of Air Land and Sea). They aren't required to play any of their games but they add new scenarios and events to your game so you can choose to use them or not. Really adds variety!

I have some apps to pass the time, like to bring to a restaurant while we wait so they're to play with a friend.  (Castles of Mad King Ludwig, Lanterns, Tirgres and Euprhates)  I have some that I like to play by myself (Splendor and Alhambra).  And some just for fun and it saves on setup and keeping score (Agricola, Small World, Ticket to Ride).

JamesReid860 Supporter42 days ago | 1 point[-]

I also really like the ones that help you set up and keep score. Those are great! I'm going to have to look up the ones you mentioned you used for pass and play... my wife and I will do that from time to time. Which is your favorite?

HooperGirl 42 days ago | 1 point[-]

If you have an iPad, my favorites are Alhambra (just because it's my favorite game anyway) and Lanterns. I've played Splendor and Castles of Mad King Ludwig on an Android tablet, but those are great too.

Thanks for the tip. I do have an iPad. I’ll check those out!

So, i play the terraforming mars app nearly everyday. It's my "play solitaire to unwind before bed" ritual.

JamesReid860 Supporter44 days ago | 2 points[-]

That one, by far, has been the most played. I might have to try it

HooperGirl 42 days ago | 1 point[-]

I will have to look it up. I still haven't played the boardgame version!

JamesReid860 Supporter42 days ago | 1 point[-]

It’s been pretty unanimous for a good game and game overall

HooperGirl 42 days ago | 1 point[-]

I guess so! So many recommendations for it in this thread. I have a few gaming friends who have played the game and liked it. I'm eager to try it!

JamesReid860 Supporter42 days ago | 1 point[-]

Me too!

JamesReid860 Supporter44 days ago | 1 point[-]

So slightly different but have any of you played Space Team? It's a group app game and if not you really should look it up now!

daver 45 days ago | 1 point[-]

Anyone play the Scythe app? It's a game I enjoy in person. Haven't put down the $20 to play it on the computer. Thoughts?

sdirrane Supporter44 days ago | 1 point[-]

I picked it up when it was on sale for like $7.  I don't think I'd drop $20 on it, but it's nice for a quick play.  On nights that I want to play a game but don't have the time to set it up.

daver 44 days ago | 1 point[-]

I'll have to keep a look out for a sale. $7 sounds nice. Thanks for the tip.

JamesReid860 Supporter44 days ago | 1 point[-]

$7 feels much better for an app than $20. I know a lot of work goes into them but $20 gets you well on your way to the actual board game.

JamesReid860 Supporter45 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have not but I REALLY like scythe

I've been playing the Terraforming Mars app a lot. I'm kind of obligated to because I'll be reviewing it next month, but wow I really like it in app form! Same game and everything, but without the fear of sneezing your player board clean. And setup/tear down is a breeze! I have yet to play with other humans, but so far I'm digging the AI.

I'm also playing Lord of the Rings LCG (aka Adventure Card Game) on Steam. Again, I'm reviewing it next month so I'm obligated, but I really, really like it. I haven't played the physical version, but apparently it's a bit different. I don't mind; it's still a great game app-wise. Very happy with it.

I play to play. Meaning, the games are fun and I enjoy it and wouldn't have time to othrewise play were it not for the apps.

HooperGirl 42 days ago | 1 point[-]

I definitely appreciate the ease of setup and no table space needed with the app versions!  Although I also like all the bits in the real games too.

JamesReid860 Supporter45 days ago | 1 point[-]

"Set up and tear down is a breeze" haha!

JamesReid860 Supporter45 days ago | 1 point[-]

I didn't realize that the Lord of the Rings LCG had an app

BenjaminK 44 days ago | 1 point[-]

I think it's relatively new, just off beta.

JamesReid860 Supporter44 days ago | 1 point[-]

When does your review come out for it?

BenjaminK 44 days ago | 1 point[-]

Mid January.

JamesReid860 Supporter43 days ago | 1 point[-]

Looking forward to it!

daver 45 days ago | 1 point[-]

I've been playing the Terraforming Mars app a lot. Been at home sick and may brother who has the physical copy of the game has been out of town. I've actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It was a good way to get back into the game since it hasn't made it to the table in a while.

JamesReid860 Supporter45 days ago | 1 point[-]

Sorry you’ve been sick man. Looks like a lot of people like terraforming Mars. Do you think it’s the interface or that it’s just something about that game that lends itself to an app?

daver 45 days ago | 1 point[-]

Thanks - on the mend now. For me it was kind of a "right app, right time" moment where I've been wanting to play the game but it doesn't hit the table a lot because there are only 2 of us interested in playing the game at game nights. So my main interest is in the game itself. The tutorial was NOT great, but the user interface was intuitive enough that by the end of the first AI game I felt comfortable with the set up and felt like I understood what was going on.

JamesReid860 Supporter45 days ago | 1 point[-]

Very cool. I also played an app game fairly recently that I can't remember the name of but the tutorial was also pretty bad. Apps need to improve in this area IMO

Skurvy5 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have a couple of apps. Through the Ages, Agricola, Sentinels of the Multiverse. These are games that I don’t own that I wanted to try. I don’t really like playing digital versions of board games. I think they lose quite a bit in translation.

HooperGirl 42 days ago | 1 point[-]

Sentinels of the Multiverse physical game is huge at my house. My husband and son play it a lot. Thanks for more info on Terraforming Mars

JamesReid860 Supporter42 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have the base game of Sentinals but haven’t played it yet. Is it pretty easy to pick up?

HooperGirl 42 days ago | 1 point[-]

I think so. I don't play often so I usually need them to remind me of the order of the steps in a turn, but it's cooperative against the game so they can help me out. I think the rules are pretty clear if I took the time to read them. I just have them lead me as we go along which is my preference for learning games, to just do it and play thru.

JamesReid860 Supporter42 days ago | 1 point[-]

Good to know. Thanks!

JamesReid860 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

Good list. After playing those, do you want to go get the hard copies?

I agree that something is lost in translation just like video games that become board games often are missing that something.

Skurvy5 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

Agricola, yes. Through the ages, yes but I don’t have a group that would be interested in playing that. Sentinels, not really any more.

JamesReid860 Supporter45 days ago | 1 point[-]

Is through the ages an involved game or is it the theme?

Marshwiggle92 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

I play star realms and onirim a fair amount as well as silver. Those are all games I don't have hard copies of.

JamesReid860 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

Nice! I’ve played Onirim app version. How are the others?

Marshwiggle92 Supporter45 days ago | 1 point[-]

Sometimes Silver will have a small bug, but over all it is quite good.

Star Realms is also quite good.

Those are the main apps I play, but I do play a fair amount of RFTG on the pc.

JamesReid860 Supporter45 days ago | 1 point[-]

Good to know. Im going to look at Silver. RFTG is also one I’ve wanted to try

NAGfactor Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have been playing the Terraforming Mars app. I have a few other that I rarely play because I would rather play on an actual board as well.

BradAlmighty 46 days ago | 1 point[-]

I just picked it up as well and have been able to play a few games. I do think it has a really nice interface, it does a good job of helping you keep up with what the opponents are doing. I had read it was buggy, but I haven't experienced any real issues yet. If you have interest in TM I think the app is a good way to learn the game and get some plays in.

sdirrane Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

Does the App include any expansions?  Have you enjoyed the App?

NAGfactor Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have enjoyed it. I don't really have anything to compare it to as I still haven't played the actually board game. But I do like the user interface they built into it and it seems to work quite nicely. I have not seen any expansions (which is a bummer). I haven't played it online yet but they have some variant options built in, they have a draft variant when buying your cards during the research phase and they have the Corporate Era variant for an extended game.

JamesReid860 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

The expansions should be coming along soon I’d imagine.

sdirrane Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

Cool, I'm really considering it.  I've played the actual board game once and we only played it about 60% correctly.  I did enjoy it, but I don't think I enjoyed it enough to actually buy the full board game so most likely if I play it I'd play it in the App.

philryuh Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

Same here, I still haven't gotten to try it. And I doubt it'll get to the table any time soon with the group that I'm in. One reason why I thought about getting the app so that I can experience what everyone likes about it haha

JamesReid860 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

This is a good point. Apps do help get the sense of a game we know we won’t be able to get out with our groups and at a lower cost

NAGfactor Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

That was kind of my thinking behind getting the app also. Give it sort of a test run and see if I like how it plays before going in fully with the game and probably expansions.

Skurvy5 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have the core board game but I don’t know if I want to own both a digital copy and a physical copy.

JamesReid860 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

Terraforming Mars is really good. If the app is good as well I could see playing that once in a while to get my fix when I can’t get the physical version to the table.

theDL 46 days ago | 1 point[-]

I play the Santorini app sometimes. The app is really good. I try not to play too often, because I don't want to get too much better than my friends. I prefer playing IRL, so I want those games to be competitive, so I don't play very much on my phone.

JamesReid860 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

I don't think that I've ever hear someone say that they don't play an app as often so they purposely don't get better. That's a good point though... if you get too much better no one will want to play it with you! (memories of 8 year old me and my older brother playing chess)

HooperGirl 42 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yes! I have a friend who was addicted to the Splendor app and now she's afraid to play with us because she'll cream us!

Skurvy5 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

Lol good point.

theDL 46 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yeah since I own the physical game I don't really want to get to that point where I'm better than all my friends. I just play to have fun and have my mind engaged, not to crush my friends lol.

philryuh Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

The world needs more people like you lol

theDL 46 days ago | 1 point[-]

Haha, it sounds altruistic, but it's also self-serving, because I want to play games with people. If they feel like they can never win, they won't play with me.

JamesReid860 Supporter46 days ago | 1 point[-]

It just is a win win for all. I will scale back to ensure that others are having fun too.
