I had a lot of down time in Madrid but not board games so I played plenty of Civ V on Steam.

I didn’t play any games this week. I took my two older daughters to Frozen 2. Does that count?

Just went with the wife last night. I felt it had a real melancholy to it that kind of followed me around all day. I really enjoyed it, though.

Supporter12 months ago

It definitely had some more grownup themes but it was a great movie. I thought it was better than frozen 1.

I might go watch that with my wife too haha

Supporter12 months ago

I quite enjoyed it. Go for it!

That totally counts! Any time spent with family is well worth it :)

Got in a game night and a short game session on Sunday:

  • Sol: Last Days of a Star: My first play of this game.  Definitely different from the usual with the spatial elements.  It's sort of a worker placement except the players make the places to place the workers as they go.  I would play this one again for sure.
  • Res Arcana:  Cool little tableau builder.  Didn't necessarily have anything that blew other tableau builder's away but was enjoyable enough.
  • Gaia Project: One of my favourites.  Still feel a bit like I'm not sure what I'm doing the first round or two but in the end I had a very solid game, pulled off my plans, and managed a solid second.  (First place managed to pull off a slightly better plan!)

Good week!

I was really interested in Sol when it was on Kickstarter. You liked it pretty well? I’d love to find someone who has it to gone it a go.

I definitely enjoyed it.  I can't say it blew me away necessarily but it had a lot of different elements so I'd be intrigued to try it again for sure.

I would say that giving it a go yourself before a purchase makes sense for that one.

Gaia project is so intriguing to me. Wish I had unlimited time and money.

It's one of my favourites.  I'd buy it except someone in my group already has it. ;)

Have any more thoughts about Res Arcana? I've seen a lot of high praise for it, especially in relation to Race for the Galaxy, or for fans of engine-building games, so I'm interested to hear more of your thoughts on it.

I haven't actually played Race for the Galaxy yet.

It's hard to say a lot after one play.  It plays pretty quick as it's a race.  I found it's not super tight with the resources so it's about getting the most out of it rather than eking out what you can.

But as I said, one play so it's hard to be super insightful. :)

I see. Thanks for the reply anyway!

I got 1.5 games in of Brass: Birmingham in! The half was with a friend and we only played the canal era. I am in love with this game lol.

Supporter12 months ago

What do you think of the switch from canal to rail? Birmingham is the game that does that isn't it?

Well the full playthrough I had was with me play two characters ha! But yes it does the transition to the Rail era and it honestly is pretty tricky. I am still deciding on how I want to teach it because it really can feel overwhelming at first if you do not know the game, same with having all of your level 1 industries come off the board after the Canal Era is an interesting twist. You want to prepare well but also be competitive!

Sounds awesome!

2 games of Wingspan at 4 players, 6 different people. My wife and I played with 2 different couples. 2 first-timers, and all of them liked it! I'm really looking forward to getting the European Expansion! I have it pre-ordered from Miniature Market, but no ETA yet.

1 game of Century: Golem Edition with my wife, who crushed me as usual, and one game at the full 5 players with 4 first-timers at work. Both were a lot of fun!

I'm so excited to play Wingspan this week! Gonna be teaching it to some of my wife's extended family who are big into birding. I need to look into the European expansion.

I'm looking forward to hearing your updates on how it went!

Update #1: We were all excited to play Wingspan last night but my wife's aunt wanted something she already knew, so we played Kingdoms instead. Really fun game, but still not Wingspan. Super gamer uncle showed up late last night so perhaps tonight is our night!

Reviews are that if you like Wingspan, you'll like what the expansion adds. If not, it doesn't change the game drastically, so it won't change your opinion on the game.

I haven't heard much about what it adds, other than more cards. Does it add any new ways to score, or anything other than just new birds?

I don't remember exactly, but it's mostly new birds. There are new ability types that trigger at the end of rounds, new round bonus tiles, and new bonus cards as well. I think some of the new birds offer more player interaction.

Cool, I can get behind all that. I also missed that video of his, so I'll check it out!

Supporter12 months ago

You missed a video? Shame!!

I am ashamed. But I have since seen the errors of my ways and made amends.
