Clans of Caledonia Tabletopia

Playthrough

Got in a game of Clans of Caledonia with a buddy from Colorado and @philryuh last night (and a random guy from Quebec).  First time I've won.

I'm so glad I got to get a digital board game in with someone from the community.  There were some things that slowed us down (ie we are in the process of sleep training our youngest), but I had a great time.

Of course the physical game is better, but it was nice to connect with others from BGA.

I think online I'd only play with 3 tops in Clans, it did take a while, but I think some of that was interface learning curve.  I think the future plays will be quicker.

Also, I can't wait until I can hook up to Discord and have some conversation when playing online too.

What'd you think Phil?

Hahahah so that's how you were playing.

What I thought of it? Well I was gearing up for the last round and it ended! :(

I had fun though, and glad that we finally got a game in. Some more thoughts:

  • Takes time getting used to all of the movements. Till the end, I couldn't figure out how to pan the window while I'm carrying an item haha
  • Sure takes much longer. If we had finished up the last round, it probably would've been 3 hours total of gameplay? We took 2.5 hours or so for the 4 rounds. But like you said, I'm sure we can get this time down a bit once people are used to it.
  • I believe Board Game Arena also has Clans of Caledonia for online play, but it's just a digital adaptation where you're basically playing a computer game. I definitely prefer simulation over pure digital since it retains more of the usual feelings behind playing board games. This will be especially true if you're talking together.
  • It was my first time playing as the clan with the whiskey related powers. And boy, it has great cashflow! It especially helped that the end of the round bonuses were lined up very conveniently for me. I think the 2nd or 3rd round bonus was the basic goods and the 4th's was the processed goods. It synergized well with my strategy of going almost all in on wheat fields and whiskey to get as many bonuses while also getting a bunch of money using my clan's powers.

It'd be great to get some plays in with others in our forum! :)

For sure.  It almost felt like playing a new game with a group for the first time (which in part it was since the group was online and new), it didn't flow as well as it could.  But I'm excited to play online again.  Clans for sure, I'd love to try Architects and Root with people from BGA.

I also agree that I like the platform that makes it feel the most like a board game as opposed to a digital version of a game.  I honestly think that this takes away from @Skurvy5's experience with Raiders.  The App game while mechanically the same is quite different.

After my less than ideal first play of Architects, I actually really enjoyed my first solo play a few days ago. Looking forward to giving it another go with my wife soon. Would love to get a game of Root with everyone here, and I know @Skurvy5's been getting into it quite a bit ever since he got a copy :D

I'm looking forward on hearing his thoughts on it.

Correct. Playing a digital board game like Raiders is basically playing a video game. At least with the simulation you have a little bit of the same feel.

Was that the version on the Switch?

I have the App version of the game.  It has some cool features, and even though you can approach it with similar strategy it definitely feels different than playing Clans and Root on a Tabletop Simulator.

Hmmm not sure if I should download it or not. Probably will go with it to see if it will be worth buying a hard copy.

Gotta hate it when somebody wrote wins just as you are gearing up to win.

Totally, I don't feel like I'm completely a winner because we played one less round.  Hopefully next time it'll be quicker and smoother.

🤞

Hahaha you were totally a top contender throughout the entire game though, I kept looking at your player area and saw +1 contract fulfilled.

Looks like fun was had!

It was good, but I can't wait to play and be on Discord too.  Phil mentioned you played Root solo.  Looking forward to hearing what you think.  Hopefully we can do that on TTS sometime.

Also, #Architects of the West Kingdom is creeping up my list of possibly spending my Amazon Gift Card on because I think the Solo gaming is really going to amp up the next couple of months in most homes.

Chatting on discord would definitely take everything to the next level.
