I nearly backed this game and I'm kind of regretting that I didn't now.

It's in retail so at least you can get it now! (not sure if there were any KS exclusives though)

I am really curious how differently the different monsters play.
Trent's review video incoming! (in the next 1-2 days hopefully?)
If they all play drastically differently then this is a solid 4-4.5/5 for me. I should have read the descriptions of the other Guardians before I left for work after the game session with Trent haha
Wow. That high. That's great.
Keep in mind though that I'm pretty easy to please xD
Edit: Solid 4/5 for sure among this category of games, I'd have to see if it's closer to 4.5 after more play (and especially after trying out the different Guardians)
Easy to please... That's makes it easier to enjoy stuff.

After my experience playing as Grak (and Trent as the Foxen Heroes), I now see the "monsters" as peace-loving Guardians just wanting to be left alone :(
I'd also have to say that it's somewhere around 9-10. Really love how simple/intuitive it is but offering different strategies and allowing you to push your luck to some degree. Plus, I always enjoy a bit of asymmetry in a game.

Both of you really enjoyed it, huh? Cool. I like a bit of push-your-luck in a game. Always a good time. Hopefully I get an opportunity to play it.
Me too. It was a bit of a gamble at times trying to think things like "should I heal later and hope that he doesn't get a card that will kill me?" As Grak, you're only limited to two actions (unless you're fatally wounded and granted one additional action) so I kept having to make those types of decisions.

I'd say 10. It's the game I want to play next over any others right now.
It's probably not that crazy of a gap.
I played as the Guardian Grak, this awesome looking monster. And Trent played as the Foxen Heroes. Despite the appearance, the Foxes actually feel like the bullies as I tried so hard to ward them off while getting the life squeezed out of me haha.
Besides the fact that I lost, the game is lots of fun. Fairly simple to pickup and the mechanics work so well with delivering on the theme. I also love the art style that's reminiscent of old cartoons like SWAT Kats.
We should switch for the next game. I'd like to play as the monster!
Sure! Would you play as Grak? Or some other monster?
Next time I play as a monster, I'm going to go much more aggressively from the get go haha. There was even one point in today's game where I had to choose between dealing two damage to your king or just doing one and then making another move (either throwing someone off or preparing). Went for just the single damage but I think it's better to prioritize damaging the king as much as possible when he's vulnerable. Now that we've gotten a feel for the game, I do wonder how different the other monsters play.
I'd play something else since I just like seeing new things. It seems important to either focus on killing the leader or ignoring it and completing the monster objective. I'm not sure though. Super fun.

I've wondered if this could be a game that my wife and I would like and I'm not quite sure.

How did you all find out about this game? It seems like a really polished game and I had never heard of it!
I'm usually on the lookout for new games for us to either review or for me to interview the designer/artist. So I tend to lurk around either the facebook groups for board game reviewers or on reddit at r/BoardGamesNews. It seemed like a solid game with not just a great look but fun gameplay too so I reached out to the publisher about a 1-2 weeks ago :)
Such a great find!
That is awesome! I am looking forward to seeing the review on this one. Seems like a hidden gem currently for sure.
I'm looking forward to it too.
Here's more info on the game if you're interested. The KS campaign launched October 2018, got around $162,000 with ~3,200 backers. Got Dice Tower's "Seal of Excellence" (if that means anything haha)
Edit: It hit retail as well.
Man I like hearing about games hitting retail after a KS campaign.
Did they send you a copy or did Trent/you purchase it?
Man that to me is like the ultimate power move...
"Power move"? o_ o?
Power move: asserting your dominance via an action you take.
Ahh I see, hahaha. Not gonna lie, it's nice being able to test out these new games for "work" :)
Wonder how Ben feels since he reviews games as well (we really need that tagging feature soon don't we)
Oh I bet you have the best time (time limiting of course). Probably takes a lot of energy to do a post game write up!
I also like their campaign stretch goals, I am always more interested in goals that improve components rather than just adding more stuff. It makes me feel like they are confident in their product as is!

This game reminds me of a cartoony, board game version of the classic Playstation game "Shadow of the Colossus". Anyone else getting this vibe?
Yeah I definitely got that vibe too.
Never played it before so I checked it out. And woah, they look pretty menacing/creepy haha. Looks like a cool game though. Just because I played as a Guardian this time, I personally feel that the Foxen Heroes are actually the menace in the relationship
Haha, I recommend it if you have a PS4 as they did a complete remake for the PS4 and it's very good. But the idea seems very similar to this game - the whole game is boss battles, and each one is different and must be approached and defeated differently. You have to figure out how to get to their weak points, whether that's climbing up their legs, stunning them and attacking their weak points, or enraging them so you can jump up onto their body while they attack you. But they each have a few different weak points and you need to do damage to those in order to take down each Colossus.
Yes, the fighting mechanic seems to be in the same vein as those types of boss battles. The Guardian I played as was the recommended one for first-time play, so I'm guessing the other Guardians will be more complex and possibly have some unique weaknesses. In general, there's also the mechanic where if one of your body parts receive the max damage, you are no longer able to wield the actions possible to that body part (e.g. max damage to the head means you can't use "Gaze") unless you heal the damage. Having played as the Guardian Grak, I think it gave me a perspective of how helpless the boss monster must feel when pushed to the edge by the heroes haha
Well it sounds pretty fun, I'm interested in trying, although I'm not sure I could get my wife to play me as she doesn't really like conflict heavy games haha.
I can relate, I wouldn't get this to play with my wife either haha
