Roll Call: Game Designers!

Game Design

Who here designs games? Comment below and tell us what you're working on! And if you have questions for the masses, feel free to get some feedback here.

I design games and have for a number of years now. I haven't published anything (yet), but did have one game be a finalist in a Button Shy contest a few years ago. I haven't submitted anything since (or before) that haha I always have something in the works, and I enjoy the creative process.

Currently I'm working on a 1v1 deckbuilding game in the form of a dragon battle. It could be considered similar to Star Realms, but I think the similarity ends in that it's a 1v1 combat deckbuilder. However, I would like to make this a game for more players, so once I test it 1v1 more, that will be my next task.

I'm looking forward to hearing about your projects!

I am not a game designer. I am not creative enough to do something like that. I can dream big ideas but there is no way that I’d ever be able to design an entire game. Major props to everyone who is able to!

I've definitely tried to design variants to games before but not a full game.

You know, a board game design contest is in the works hosted by BGA! :)

Supporter13 months ago

That sounds awsome, but that should have a longer deadline than the hackathlon :D

Lol definitely!

Say whaaaat? That should be fun!

Ben you need to get the Star Wars license. A space combat deck building Star Wars game sounds pretty amazing.

That would be so much fun! Now to figire out how to create a game that FFG would want :)

+1 on Ben getting the license and starting his cafe soon too

I'd call it...The Hive (of Scum and Villainy)

I have dreams of designing games, strategy wise, but I do not have the artistic ability. I would need to partner up for sure.

Yes, I don t think there are many game designers out there who does the artwork as well. It always good to have a grapich designer friend, or an artist. But since these many times start out as hobby projects it can be hard to convince an artist to invest that many time in the process :)

Partner up, or else hire out artists. If you sell your game directly to a publisher, they will most likely hire their own artist anyway, even if you've already done art for it. While art is super important, it's one of the last things that gets done :)

My friend inspired by My Little Scythe is working on a game he is calling KiddieCulture (A kids version of Viticulture where you run a lemonade stand)

Wow! Cute idea. Hope it pans out!

Oh my goodness that is perfect! That would be another great one for kids!

Sounds so cool.

Maybe when all my kids get older and I have time.  I'd love to try to design a game but I don't know if I have the skill set to come up with good rules that work well together.

I've had games in the works that failed miserably when I started play testing them. The concepts sounded good, but implementation was...less than fun haha Sometimes you gotta just start, trash your first few dozen ideas, and keep going until one works. I always start with a theme I'd like to see happen, and then figure out what mechanics could work well with the theme.

Cool.  That's good advice.  I think I'll start making a list of themes I like and see if I can spark some ideas.  I know I'd want a lot of player interaction and some combat.  I do like the idea of a good SciFi themed game.  Maybe a game with some kind of MultiVerse theme.

A multiverse game would be fun! I say start brainstorming, and if you're stuck, create a forum post here and elsewhere to get some brainstorming help. You'd be surprised where inspiration can come from.

For example, yesterday we were at a family's house playing games, and two of their daughters--ages 10 and 11, I think--we drawing dragons on scratch paper. Well, I obviously commented and told them about the game I'm working on (with dragons), and they were so excited that they wanted to try some concept art (although that's not the term they would have used. In the end, they gave me some fantastic ideas from some of their drawings! Good drawings, too. I was super impressed. They gave me their drawings to use for ideas in my game, and I can tell you that I most certainly will be! I was certainly not expecting to find such inspiration from two young girls, but wow, they probably helped improve the game more than they could ever know! Moral of the story? Inspiration can come from some unexpected sources. :)  Good luck!

The latest game I've been working on is called Ultimate Fighters, it's a 2-5 player game where you pick a character and stage then fight. I even made a website and video on it but based on feedback I need to update it to show more of what sets it apart from other fighting style games. If you want to see a preview you can check it out here: https://www.boardgameatlas.com/products/ultimate-fighters

I think I’ve commented about this before but it does look really cool.

That looks cool! At first I thought, "This sounds like Smash!" And then in the video you related it to Smash as well haha I like the health deck, where you draw cards for each HP of damage. That adds a neat twist to the game. When do you plan on launching?

Supporter13 months ago

I'm not sure. Since starting Board Game Atlas I've put it on the back burner but everything is fully developed, it's gone under about 400 playtests for balance, and art is complete. I just need more time for the marketing :P

I think it's time to get it back on the front burner :) It looks like you've put a lot of time into it; might as well get it out there. Of course, I'm sure BGA and launching a KS are two very time consuming tasks, so while it's easy for me to say, I can see it being a time commitment not yet possible. I hope to see it come about soon!
