Top 5 Thematic Elements That I'm a Sucker For

Theme. I love it. And there are certain things that have me salivating immediately.

5. Storytelling: OK, so this isn't really a specific "thing" but it is crucial in theme (I think, at least). And perhaps this should be #1, because without a narrative...who cares? haha just kidding ("I care." - Luke Skywalker). But games like Above and Below (won't tag) and #Near and Far just capture my imagination like nothing else.

4. Spaceships: If it has anything to do with a spaceship, I'm in. Games like #Star Wars X-Wing, #Scorpius Freighter, and #Tiny Epic Galaxies are noteworthy.

3. Brandon Sanderson: This should probably be #1, but since there are only three game (to my knowledge) that are based off his books, I figured I'd save the top two spots for things with a lot more games. I don't know if I have a favorite Sandereson game, as they are all great, but here they are: #Call to Adventure: The Stormlight Archive, #Mistborn: House War, #The Reckoners Board Game. And I also have a few #Mistborn Metal Dice.

2. Dinosaurs: The scalier, the better, although some of the feathered ones are still cool. But I'm old school when it comes to depictions of dinosaurs. #Tiny Epic Dinosaurs is one of my new favorite dino games.

1. Dragons: I guess I really like scaly lizards for some reason. If it's got dragons, I want it, I need it, I must have it. Ironically, I've never really played Dungeons and Dragons (I know, there aren't always dragons in it), but the creatures are a weakness. I think #Clank!  is my preferred game involving a dragon.

I'm a sucker for themes that add a new spin on video game/film tropes. So instead of focusing on the usual band of heroes in an RPG video game, it would be on the merchants or NPC's (e.g. #Bargain Quest, which I haven't played, and not particularly drawn to because of its relative simplicity).

Supporter3 months ago

Bargain Quest is really light but I love the theme.  I've become more open to additional games (shorter games as part of a longer game night) than I previously was.  I think Bargain Quest is great for this and quick to play.

Bargain Quest is pretty simple...but I like it. Of course, it's generally not going to be my first (or second) pick. Another NPC game (kind of) is #Hero's Crossing. I reviewed it...but didn't really care for it. I mean, it was alright, but a little too clunky. Which is a shame, because I was really digging the idea.

I love Fantasy...it almost doesn't matter...if it is fantasy I will look at it.  Also...appreently Merchants.  I have coming to me from Kickstarter the following

#MerchantsofInfinity #MerchantsCove #MerchantsofQultah and #MerchantsoftheDarkRoad

, seems like the tagging busted...

Any other promising merchant games in 2020? xD

Also, what were you using when trying to tag? Mobile? Desktop? Chrome?

I was on a Mac laptop

I think I do really enjoy sci-fi, not necessarily based on an existing IP just games that allow for the weird and the wacky. Histroically based games, especially when they are more specific like #Gùgōng or #878: Vikings - Invasions of England or #13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis where someone has taken a very specific event or time period and created a game to recreate it.

How is#Near and Far?  It's always something that has kind of caught my attention but I can't remember if it's coop?  Also I feel like I've seen set up and tear down is really long.

I don't recall setup/takedown being an issue. I don't own the game so I've only played it when others have dealt with that, but it didn't look like too much. I don't believe there's a co-op mode, but the expansion allows for solo play (so maybe there is co-op with the expansion?). There are different variants, though. For example, you can do it as a campaign or as each game being its own thing. It's good.

Good to hear.  And big plus that it's not a coop game.  I don't really care for those.

Storytelling through gameplay. #Xia: Legends of a Drift System has been super fun for that.

Space. I like space.

Critters.  I don't really have any games with critters, but I'm always interested in them.  Watership Down always holds a good place in my imagination, so I still have hopes of some day playing Aftermath.

Dinosaurs. I used to have pencil bags full of little dino mini toys when I was a kid, which naturally fed into my draw to #Perseverance: Castaway Chronicles... I did try it on tabletopia just to address my fears that I only wanted to back it because of dinos, and I really enjoy Anachrony, but I'd be lying to myself if I didn't admit that the dinos won't make me feel like a kid again.

Anything uncommon.  Themes that are different than a lot of games will usually draw me in even if I'm not that interested in the theme initially.

loved Watership Down! I'll have to look into Aftermath now haha AND! I just now found out WaterShip Down is a Netflix series??? Defintitey going to have to check that out!

Whoa! I had no idea, just added it to my watch list.  Thanks!

You have a lot of Fantasy in there.  Nice!

I can't help myself haha It's my weakness.

Haha!  This is a good topic.

#1. Dinosaurs (I guess I'm just a little boy at heart)

#2.  Favorite TV shows

#3   Transformers

#4  Beer

#5   Storage Units

What is your favourite beer related game?

Don't think I've ever heard of it, will have to check it out

I love this idea! For me, Star Wars, Dune, and realistic-ish animal themes probably make up my top 3 (in no particular order). I don't even own a single Star Wars game though, which is kinda funny, given that there is Star Wars stuff all over my house except for in my game shelves.

Are there many other Dune related games?

Not really. There's an old out of print CCG, and a PnP dice game maybe? But Gale Force 9 has the license, and I'm pretty sure they said they were working on more games, so hopefully those are real and are good.

That would be cool, I am so looking forward to watching the new film.

Tell me about it! The fact that this movie could possibly be delayed is my #1 frivolous fear right now lol. Actually the fear is less that it will be delayed, but that the box office won't be good enough and they won't make the second part.

Haha, I haven't actually read anything about whether or not it will be delayed. And yeah, would be sad if it bombed.

I think for now they have not said that it's being delayed as so many other movies are, but we'll see

Sounds promising

I, too, love realistic-ish animal themes. I think that's one reason I like #The Alpha. As for Star Wars games...that's understandable.  They're pricey. I only have four, and that's taken years and years to accomplish. Plus #Monopoly: Star Wars Limited Collector's Edition which I got in 1997 (or whenever it came out) and two versions of Trivial Pursuit, which I snagged (one still in shrink) at a thrift store.

Haven't gotten to your post about The Alpha, yet, but I will have to do so!

For some reason I didn't know you were so into dragons... That's interesting.
