Playing Wingspan IRL (Not Really But It's Cool)

GUYS! We were at a nature sanctuary today and got playing with some chickadees. One landed on my wife's hand and lingered there for a good long time! I obviously thought of Wingspan immediately, and knew it needed to be shared haha Also, I'd like to also mention that I had THREE lil' birds land on my hand. Unfortunately I a) freaked out (didn't expect it initially), b) twitched too much, and c) jumped in surprise. So while i had more visitors, their total lingering times added up to about a second haha

After playing Wingspan more frequently, I'm getting more and more interested in birding, and when wee get back from break, I'm gonna jump into the hobby! Wish me luck haha

Man that looks cold.

It wasn't actually too bad that day! It was just a little below freezing, like by a degree or two. Not bad at all.

Supporter11 months ago

That still sounds cold...

Well, I suppose below freezing is technically cold :)

Supporter11 months ago

In fact, I would consider it to be freezing.

;-P

Good luck with the new hobby! Elizabeth Hargrave lives about 30 min from me. I’m going to have to find out if her group needs another play tester.

Wow, that's cool.

Supporter11 months ago

I think it would be cooler if I actually had met her. I'm going to have to one day soon.

Wingspan is a great game, I like how it actually helps you get interested in the topic of birds!

Indeed. Very smart of her to incorporate that theme into the game.

Definitely, not to mention the uniqueness of the theme itself!

Awesome! Any idea if it's a common thing for those birds to do (landing on people's hands)?? I always enjoy reading those little bird facts on Wingspan's cards, like that one bird that pierces its prey on the needlelike plants it inhabits.

Birding sounds cool. I know the artist of Evolution (Catherine Hamilton) is a professional birder. It was interesting to hear her insights when I interviewed her, and her lifestyle is so unique (she's home less than half of the time in a year, always traveling back and forth)

I'm not sure. We did have some seeds, so that may have helped haha

I don't think I'll ever be as hardcore a birder as Catherine Hamilton haha But I do look forward to learning more about the fowl creatures around me :)

It's funny how playing Wingspan makes us say things like, "That bird would lay three eggs," or "I don't think it's ok for that bird to land in the forest."  Goofy, I know, but then our family is pretty goofy.

Haha but so true!

At least the science behind the game helps us learn where birds will typically go haha I can guarantee I'll be like that after some more plays :)

Definitely good luck with that. There are so many different kinds, each interesting in their own way. Do you have a good pair of binoculars already?

Quite an awesome moment to have birds landing on you. May need to find a way to integrate into your Wingspan sessions at home. Really bring it to life.

I don't have binoculars, unfortunately. If only I'd thought of this BEFORE Christmas haha I do have a Canon, but need a better lens for long-distance shots. I'd love to combine birding with photography.

Supporter11 months ago

That might work out better anyway, having a long distance lens instead of binoculars. Definitely need a monopod or tripod to hold that steady but hopefully you will be able to get some good pictures.

I do have a tripod, but it's a 50 pound beast I use for video. I need something a little more portable haha

Supporter11 months ago

Definitely agree. 😆

Or just combine photography, birding and cardio. 3 resolutions in one activity!!
