Many people here know Scythe is one of my all time favorite games.  Having said that, I do really appreciate area control and combat.  I haven't had the chance but I'm really excited to try out the following variant.  While some (@skurvy5) aren't fans of house rules.  I love them, it's one of the things I love about Board Games.

Combat Variant

I can't wait to try this one out.

Let me know what you think about the possibility of adding this to the game.

That looks really interesting. Would be intrigued to see how it changes the game - The one thing that pops into my head is that it could help out saxony a touch. I'm not saying it would make it unbalanced per say, but getting unlimited stars from combat - having less dis-incentive from combat could be a heckofa combo.

You know I never considered that.  It could cause some necessary temporary alliances.  Which is something I'm a big fan of.

I have a lot of thoughts to share.  But before I get to that, I thought I'd let ya'll know.  My 7 year old schooled my in My Little Scythe today.

One question however. How is the player interaction? I always hear back and forth that there is a lot or none at all.

I also like playing at 7 player.  My experience. player interaction can depend on who's at the table.  If you have a lot of players who like a lot of combat, you will see it.  But that can also cause the cold war aspect to ramp up in successive plays.  When you know people like to battle everyone holds on to their combat abilities.  Which can also be fun, and a little stressful, you have to have great timing.

Man that sounds so fun haha

I’ve only heard good things about this game but have never had the chance to play..hopefully soon!

I think it was like the third game that I got when I first got into the hobby and it's always on the top of my list.  I really enjoy it when it gets played.  The first play takes a long time but when everyone has played you can even get a 7 player game played in less than 2 hours.  Plus a crowded board it really fun.

That’s crazy...Well hopefully soon I will get to experience this!

In lower player counts (2-3) player interaction can be very low to non-existent depending on player styles however, if you do a full on 7 player game (which I LOVE this game at 7) the board is so crowded there really is not way to NOT have a lot of combat.

Wow 7 players haha sounds like fun but hard to come by

It can be - and I don't suggest a 7 player game with more than 1 or 2 newbies at the table. But when everyone knows what they are doing you can knock a 7 player game out in 2 hours or less (we did 90 minutes once!)

Side note: I haven't tried the modular board but I've heard that at lower player counts the modular board can increase player interaction.

Oh gotcha. Can’t wait to hopefully play this soon

Man I have always wanted to play scythe. I only know one person who has it and we don’t play together often. Really hoping I get the chance to play it soon

Have you been able to pull this one out yet @trentellingsen?

Not yet, haha. I still would like to. There's been a lot to work on lately though :P

My one critique of Scythe are the factions that can't go with certain boards. That is minor because Scythe is one of three games that I rate a 5/5 and one of two that I host 5-7 games night a year to play.

I would argue that the area control is not disguised but rather the engine efficiency around resource gathering is disguised. I say this having just hosted a six player game and watching four players chase after the factor despite consequences while I sat back and watched them waste resources and skip bottom actions until could grab my own factory card at little cost. I never got to use my factory card but won the game because I managed my resources most efficiently.

I think you misunderstood that part of the review. :) We are in agreement!
