Paladins of the West Kingdom review

Review

Finally got to play with my wife and brother-in-law. The rules took about 20 minutes to walk through with questions and clarifications. It's easy to miss a few things while playing since many actions involve two or three things happening. Took us about 2 hours and 20 minutes to finish but much of that was fumbling through the first several rounds so I'd put this at about a 90 minute game with everyone knowing the rules and no one over thinking their turn.

I'd say while this is a clear worker placement game the unique use of different workers and significant variety of actions makes it unique within the genre. It hints at Anachrony but has more worker types and more actions. It is easy to drown amid the number of options you have available on a given turn.

The king's orders provide some direction while playing narrowing the reasonable options somewhat though deciding between building your engine and pursuing king's orders can be challenging.

Everyone enjoyed it including my wife who generally hates learning games but loves playing them once they are learned. She ended up winning as the attributes are the valuable for points and the rest of us spent a turn too long trying to engine build.

Great game in a small box for the price. Not a gateway game but when taking the jump from entry level games to the next level this might be on the heavy side of a good choice.

I played it on New Year's Day and thought it was great. It was really easy for us to learn because we've played other titles in the line.

I was able to come in second without recruiting or attacking and only recruited one additional card. I spent my time building all of the "buildings" and maxing out the influence tracks.

What were the king's orders in your game?  I generally let that drive some of my decisions.  How was the first player's strategy different from yours?

First was Convert, Second was Absolve, Third was Attack. I figured I could just get the absolve and still win. His end game scoring from his Converted cards is what made the difference.

The other two players got two of the three and I beat both by 15+

Interesting. I'm still trying to work out a good strategy. I like how the game complexity makes it tough to easily land on one approach.

Have you played the other games from either the North Sea or West Kingdom trilogies? Just curious how it compares!

I also looked at your play log page but I figured it probably doesn't have all of your plays haha. It was fun taking a gander though and 58 plays of Gloomhaven is very impressive!

I haven't played any others in those series and don't have much to compare.

I am not terribly great at logging plays though I have tried to get better of late.  I lucked out finding a friend (a dad of one of my son's friends) who is willing to start playing at 4:30 AM till we have to leave for work around 6.  It's not ideal, but it's the only time we can squeeze in regularly without work or family or responsible adulthood interrupting...lol.

Wow, how often are you two planning to meet? Sounds like quite a commitment, but fun nonetheless lol. Trent runs BGA full-time and I'm half-time with a full-time engineering job (typical 8-5 or 9-6 kind of deal), and there was one time when we met up at 8am to squeeze in one round of Skulk Hollow after we received a review copy. It was fun! haha. I can completely relate to the difficulty of getting in game time amidst of work and family now that I have an 18 month old son.

It's hit or miss from week to week.  He's a firefighter and so we usually get in about two mornings a week for at lest an hour.  We use the app which saves quite a bit of setup and teardown time as well as game parts management.

Nice! Are you two trying out different games? Which games have been good for meeting that time limit but still giving you a satisfying gameplay?

Oh, we have played Gloomhaven exclusively during those early AM slots. If we finish the first box and Forgotten Circles I imagine we will try out some other games. He has a garage behind his house where we can leave games set up. That's been a huge factor in being able to play Gloomhaven so efficiently. I don't have a dedicated space like that at my place (maybe one day).

That makes sense, Gloomhaven does seem like a good fit for this sort of meetup. Do you feel like the two of you will be sticking with Gloomhaven for a long time? or mixing it up some day?

Thanks! That was really interesting. I have been really wanting to try anachrony for awhile, so reading you say that it hinted at it peaked my interest. Might have to check this out!

If you end up playing Anachrony I recommend 3D printing some storage components for the game.  There are a lot o parts and pieces and set up tends to take awhile.  I have a gaming friend with access to a 3D printer and pay him in beer for game storage parts when I need them.  I did the same thing with Dinosaur Island and Scythe to help with set up and take down.  It's the one thing that keeps me from getting Anachrony to the table as much as I would like.

That’s a great idea! I have a friend that has a printer so I’ll have to ask him. Thanks for the tip

Thanks for the review! I’m really excited to get my copy out now.

Are you going to play it solo?

Didn’t realize you could do solo!

I've tried playing the solo version two times now.  The first playthrough I had to stop for house cleaning and never finished and the second one I got to the final round and had to stop for a family event :(   I enjoyed both playthroughs and if you are looking for a good long solo play through it takes about 90 minutes to finish a game (Wingspan solo takes me about 45m or less).

Haha that’s a bummer. But thanks that was helpful.

That is one of the beauties of the west kingdom series as compared to the north sea series.

That’s good to know! I have not really looked into either series a lot. I’ve only played Raiders once. I liked it!

20 minute teach for three new players? That doesn't sound bad at all. This game looks really really interesting. I wonder how u/skurvy5 will like his copy.
