What are the best board games for couples?

Supporter

I've been enjoying playing games with my wife for the last year and find that typically we enjoy games together that have minimal player interaction (so we're not attacking each other) or really great cooperative experiences (like #Gloomhaven). However, if we have friends over at the house (which hopefully we can do more soon) we're up to play game with more interaction since there's less direct.

Our favorites to play as 2 players are

I think my wife thinks the best board games for couples are any games I can play solo hahaha (amiright @Skurvy5).

Agree on Viticulture and Tiny Towns!

Some other top ones we have really enjoyed:

I've never played century (spice or golem) 2P before, I imagine it becomes super tactical when you are just alternating?

Yeah, since you're able to more accurately determine which cards your opponent is going for, you can play a little more tactically. Of course, due to the nature of the game, you can't really do anything to mess with them, but you can plan a little bit better.

Yeah, it is mostly multiplayer solo, but I was thinking about card purchase and golem buying, you might be much more aware of what your opponent wants/is going for than in a 4P game

I like Jaipur but it is highly competitive. So it can easily  end up in a fight :)

Haha, we haven't found that so far. I find this happens more frequently in #Carcassonne, which is another one we play fairly often.

The ones that my wife and I have played the most together are:

For two player games, I think it is hard to beat #7 wonders duel,  but it definitely has a bit more 'take that'.

#Gloomhaven, definitely.

My wife isn't enough into games to play 2p with me very often, but we occasionally enjoy like abstracts or role-and-writes. In the Before Times, we would take #Qwixx or #Qwinto to bars and knock out a few games.

I'm pretty meh on #That's Pretty Clever as a group game, but it's really fun as a 2 player.

Are you still wanting 2P games for when your friends come over?

If so:

#13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis - our favourite 2P game, lots of decisions to be made as you are working with the cards you are dealt, plenty of bluffing and the decisions you make early in the game have ramifications later on, good or bad. It's also great as you are never out of the game even if you mess up early.

#Valley of the Kings: Afterlife we really enjoy that as a 2P game, has minimal direct interaction but is really nice and the artwork is great.

#The Fox in the Forest Duet recent edition but a really pleasant and pretty cooperative game

#War of the Ring (Second Edition) I don't own it but me and a friend have played a bunch and it is a joy everyone, would be great for a couple if you were both into it as it is a long game but worth every second and great to play with the same person multiple times

#Azul and #Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra have been major winners over here!
