Interesting. I was hoping for a newer system than Raiders, but I like that game and I like this art style SOOOO much more. thanks for the vid!

Yeah, it won't be on my wish list because it looks too similar for me.  I actually think I prefer the board of Raiders more.  I'm not the biggest fan of games that are better versions of the old ones if I have the older game already.

I feel the same. But I have to admit the new theme really draws me since its so fresh.

sdirrane Supporter6 days ago | 2 points[-]

Oh yeah, the theme is really cool.  I feel like they could have used the theme for a new game with new mechanics, because I'm definitely drawn to the theme.  But when you have to be extremely discerning when purchasing games you can't buy a game that's essentially the same.  Even some of the mechanics I saw are part of the Raiders of the North Sea Expansions.

I totally agree, I always have a little disappointment creep in when I learn that.

It makes me wonder if I need to try to unload Raiders of the North Sea and get this instead.

nealkfrank 8 days ago | 1 point[-]

If you have all of the expansions, it seems like you can have a very similar experience!

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I agree with you there, if I had owned Raiders, then I wouldn't be getting on this especially if I had the expansions too. Also, I like what Garphill Games does so I'm glad everyone's liking this new game, but I am curious what made them pursue refining a previous game rather than focusing on something entirely new

When you finish a game design, its just a snapshot in time where you thinking about it was  captured. You still think "oh that could be better" years after its in the wild.

So you're saying this is the Star Wars Special Edition of Raiders of the North Sea? :-)

Skurvy5 Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

Makes sense!

Cardboard_Guru 10 days ago | 2 points[-]

The fact that there are no planned expansions to 'fix' the game appeals to me. We need more games that are just self-contained in one box. I prefer a more slim and refined experience than bloated with expansion mechanics

Marshwiggle92 Supporter11 days ago | 2 points[-]

I haven't played #Raiders of the North Sea, and I'm not super likely too. But, I could see myself getting this.

verysmallbeta 11 days ago | 2 points[-]

I think I'm in the same boat as the theme is fresh and the artwork is more aligned with my tastes.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter11 days ago | 2 points[-]

Theme is fresher,,,,, that is true.

3MBG 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Vikings get done a lot.

But i'm struggling to think of another Scythian focused game.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Not even #scythe....

LOL

Skyw3rd 7 days ago | 1 point[-]

If you've never played #Raiders of the North Sea but are interested in it, I'd think this is the best way to play the mechanics of it. It's basically Raiders and expansion distilled into it's purest form.

OOOH I've been waiting for this one to come out. So I assume that the solo deck is included in the box this time around? Also, are they planning to work on expansions at all or will it entirely depend on the reception?

As much as I like Mico's artwork, this is quite a nice cleaned up version. Definitely better than my first impressions. And I adore variable player powers in games.

3MBG 11 days ago | 2 points[-]

Solo deck - Yes

Expansions - no plans at this stage.

Skurvy5 Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

The art style and theme for this one is instantly incredibly appealing. Gameplay seems much tighter and improved over North Sea.

Can Garphill do a Roman themed game? Please?

3MBG 7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Hahahahahaha...... oh wow...... Um...... stay tuned?

3MBG 7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Ah yep, its on here, but not much to show yet. https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/304783/hadrians-wall

Yessss!!!!

Right after reading J's comment, I was thinking of tagging you and @Marshwiggle92 haha

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Cool beans. I didn't know that.

3MBG 7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Bobby Hill has designed the game, and hes a friend of mine. We worked together at DOC, so he showed me some early versions. Its a "roll and write" type game. But one on crack. Its quite mighty

verysmallbeta 11 days ago | 1 point[-]

Is this going to be a kickstarter game?

philryuh Supporter11 days ago | 2 points[-]

When I click to the game page, I see that it's already available for pre-order

3MBG 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

No KS. Pre-order direct first, then to stores.

theDL 11 days ago | 1 point[-]

Huh, I was wondering if they'd fold in some of the expansion content which, in my estimation, has pretty much universal approval (I think Hall of Heroes is the main one people mention). Guess not.

Skyw3rd 7 days ago | 2 points[-]

It looks to me like they did.

  • Quests and Offerings were combined into one. Quests are from Hall of Heroes
  • Mead from Hall of Heroes is now Kumis and it plays the same role
  • Wounds from Fields of Fame are now integrated into the raiding mechanic by default

It seems like it's Raiders and the two expansions integrated and streamlined.

theDL 7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Are the pieces they brought over from the expansions enough to give the game what you feel base ROTNS is missing?

Skyw3rd 7 days ago | 1 point[-]

I'm a big fan of offerings and quests being separate and I'm not exactly sure how they work when combined, but if I had to recommend someone get ROTNS and Hall of Heroes or just get Raiders of Scythia, I'd probably say Scythia.

theDL 6 days ago | 1 point[-]

Cool. Thanks for the insight!

3MBG 11 days ago | 1 point[-]

No plans currently. Although a lot of people do talk about the expansions, i believe in sales terms, they sell far less than many people might think.

theDL 11 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yeah that makes sense. No sense cluttering a good game with extra content if most people are happy without it.

sdirrane Supporter10 days ago | 2 points[-]

I have to say, as one who owns Raiders and the Heroes Expansion, I would never consider playing Raiders without it.  I could see Raiders getting pretty dry without it.

Skyw3rd 7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Completely agree. I rarely play with Fields of Fame, but I always play with Hall of Heroes.

sdirrane Supporter6 days ago | 1 point[-]

Sounds like of the two I picked the right one.

Skyw3rd 5 days ago | 1 point[-]

Absolutely. I'd actually say if you wanted to play with Fields of Fame's most interesting mechanics play Raiders of Scythia.
