2 Solo Playthroughs of Paladins of the West Kingdom

Finally finished two runs of Paladins of the West Kingdom (I actually finished this time!).  The first game I lost to a tiebreaker with the automa (2nd tiebreaker!) as we both scored 41 points and I had 1 more suspicion card than the automa.  The second game I ran away with beating automa 55-36.

The automa easily beat me on the attribute tracks but the second game I was able to complete all the kings orders and paid all my debts.  The Automa was only able to complete one kings order and ended with one open debt.

There's a lot to keep up with in this game and the first several attempts at the automa I missed several things.  I believe my last playthrough was the cleanest.  Despite the set up and take down it was fun to play and I can see myself breaking this one out several times over the year.  I think I wish there were a few more kings order and kings favors to randomly choose from but that's a little nitpicky.

Even though I'm not much of a solo gamer, I'm really like how games like this one are embracing Automa for their solo modes.

Oh the Automa really adds a lot of replay-ability for a game. Sometimes you gotta just scratch the itch but nobody is available!

No truer words were spoken...

This guy gets it lol. What other games do you play solo?

WadeB1977 5 days ago | 1 point[-]

Wingspan, Scythe, Anachrony, Gloomhaven, Dinosaur Island, Founders of Gloomhaven, Tapestry, Spirit Island, Sword and Sorcery, Everdell, Tiny Epic Galaxies, and Friday...and Robinson Crusoe

Wow. Which is your favorite?

WadeB1977 5 days ago | 1 point[-]

Wingspan for sure!

That is interesting.

I think Wingspan offers the most diverse solo experience over a reasonable gameplay timeframe.  I can get through Wingspan in about 30-40 minutes and take longer if I really want to nerd out on trying to win.  Scythe, Anachrony, and Gloomhaven are simply more fun with other people.  Dinosaur Island has a huge setup footprint and while fun to play its more of a time commitment.  Same for Founders of Gloomhaven, Robinson Crusoe, Tapestry, Spirit Island, Sword & Sorcery, and Everdell.  Paladins might come in second to Wingspan as I don't have to break out my giant gaming table and I can get through a game in about an hour.

That makes a lot of sense. That is one reason I wanted Deep Space D-6. It looked like it had fairly low setup and fairly fast play time.

Dannnngggg you are a champion of solo plays. Do you buy games based on if they have solo play or not?

WadeB1977 5 days ago | 1 point[-]

It's a factor but not the only factor. I will get expansions and games I think my family will like as well. If it's a good game I'll still get it.  Sometimes I'll play it as if there are two players but alone if I have to. No one has the patience to learn a game with me so I have to do that at least once of twice with every game.

I am the same way. I had to play a solo game of Brass: Birmingham while just playing as two separate players and it helps a ton with getting the feel of a game and being able to teach it.

Solo play is definitely a sweetener of the pot for me.

So true.

I’m the same way. I think it’s cool because it at least gives you the option and helps you experience the game in a new way

I  enjoy the new experience as well as getting to practice.  In my case I'm usually teaching the game when I play with others and playing the solo version often helps me teach the game more quickly and fluidly.  There is also a dynamic of learning to play the game better that I like with many solo playthroughs.  With Paladins I was able to learnt o better prioritize the kings orders and specifically the latter two kings orders in addition to the attribute tracks.  I have also learned how to use both recruit actions better than when I started and not just recruiting them every time.

This! I try and play any game I have at least once before playing with others to get a feel for the rules and the play. It helps the future teach a lot.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter5 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yes, it does help.

Sliddell11 6 days ago | 1 point[-]

I never thought about that helping you teach the game! That’s a great idea! I’ll have to test that out on some of my games

This one looks cool! I’d like to play it at some point

Really looking forward to playing this one solo. It seems like with each game the solo portion improves. Looking forward to this one solo and then Circadians when I pick it up.

Can’t wait to play this one! It’s in line behind some other games though.

Great. Glad to hear it holds up to some solo.
