Another Meeple or Mini Options

D.E.I.

I know I'm probably going to get @Skurvy5 ire for sharing this KS preview page. Haha.

But, when I saw The Great Wall offer this in their KS, my wish for board games is that this would become the trend.  There are some games I really enjoy minis in, but overall I think I prefer meeples.  Having two options is really cool and I hope to continue to see more of it.

Yes and no. Seeing the minis just makes the meeples look bland to me haha

That's funny, I guess different things for different people.  I actually find the Meeples to be more attractive.

I’m glad they offer two different options!

I like this idea. It’s good to see companies thinking about the cost of their products.

Absolutely.  Quick side note to join in your disdain (at least partially) for KS.  I love the Meeples or Minis.  What I don't like about this KS now that it's launched that I see a lot of if price gouging once you think your interested.  What I mean is extra money to be a "legendary" backer so you can get everything.  Want to make it a 5 player game instead of 4, cough up more cash and we'll throw that option in for you.  Another reason I respect Leder.  Just tell me what I'm gonna get and don't try to upsell me through the entire campaign.

It's even worse when they add stuff to the upsell items after the campaign starts.  It's like, ooo you definitely want to give us more money now because the only way you can get the KS exclusive content that we leak little by little is to give us more.

Ugh those kind of practices are the worst! Design a game. Make it good. Don’t use stretch goals to change your design. Use stretch goals for cool but unimportant stuff like metal bits, etc.

Yes!  The worse is when they force upgraded components down your throat and make you pay for something you're not interested in.  I say the word "make" loosely because it's your choice.  But I have had to make the choice to not get a game or back a game because the company made it unnecessarily expensive.

That is actually really neat! Totally helps cut the cost!

Yeah, you know as someone who is budget conscience that is part of it for me.  But even more so, I prefer Meeples to Minis most of the time.  I can't think of a game that has meeples that I would say, many I really wish there were minis.  But there are definitely games that have minis that I think could work just as well with meeples.  Sometimes even more so.

I love the Meeples in Root and I think that game would be far less aesthetically pleasing if it had minis, or even one mini that represent a whole army.

I totally agree with you on that! There’s just something about meeples...

some games like cry havoc might be weird without it because of the look of the game...but I think that’s a rare exception.

Supporter10 months ago

Oh yeah, I think there are some games that it just wouldn't work.  Anything with known characters would be hard.  I'm thinking of anything in Star Wars (IA) or Lord of the Rings games.  But I think some games could still function well with Meeples even if it's not an option.  I'm thinking of something like Western Legends.  Now it's a bit hard for me to imagine it with Meeples but I think that's mostly because I've played it many times now.  However, when I really think about it, I don't pay too much attention to the Minis except when I'm picking one out at the beginning.  If you had artfully done Meeples (like Leder Games) I think it would still be a really fun game.  What do you think @BenjaminK

Spot on 👌🏻

I agree with your comment. I think it would work in some cases. I'd probably be totally fine with it in Western Legends. Actually, #Star Wars: Outer Rim uses cardboard standees instead of minis, and that works fine. Of course, their likeness is still there, but it's certainly now high-end like minis are. Would Outer Rim be better with minis? I don't think so, personally. I can still lose myself in the theme without.

Though I don’t need minis, cardboard standees are annoying to me just because they can get ruined so quick..

Ug, yes! Cardboard standees really aren't ideal for that one reason. Getting them into their little plastic stands involves mutilating the bottom of the standee trying to get it to fit. But, once it's in, it works :)

Not to mention how often they are handled in game! They just get messed up too easily

Supporter10 months ago

I didn't even consider that.  Although I don't have any games with standees so that's probably why.

I have king of Tokyo that utilizes these. It makes sense for the game because they are large. However one of the standees doesn’t fit in any of the plastic holders because of overuse. They just don’t stand the test of time even though they may look nice

Ah, yes. I do have King of Tokyo as well. Ours hasn't been played enough to start being difficult to get in, but I always play as Meka Dragon so that's gonna be the first to go haha

Haha nooooo!! Mine was bought used so that’s where my problem was..

Pretty sure that's my only game with standees. I've reviewed games where they've substituted minis for standees for their prototype, but I'm not as worried about those getting destroyed :)

Supporter10 months ago

I think I would feel the same way about Star Wars: Outer Rim, the standees do the job.  I also am glad that its artwork and not picture stills.  I abhor picture stills in components for games.

Like in Star Trek Ascendancy? haha

Supporter10 months ago

This is what happened to me with #The Expanse.  I thought it looked like it had decent mechanics and I love The Expanse book series, but the components and art were terrible.  All of the "art" were stills from the TV Show (which I'm waiting to watch until I read all the books).  Stills to me speak of trying to get a product out instead of taking time to make something really good.

Yeah, I feel ya. That's one reason I really like games based on books (and not their associated movies/tv shows); with books, they're forced to create more art for me to admire :)

FRONTIERS! I even googled Ascendency to see if they used still images in the game (which they do). It still didn't sound right but I went with it anyway. Glad you popped in to correct my blunder.

I really like seeing this trend, if it is a trend.

Lol we need a meme of Brian holding a cane.

If the minis actually look like that, they seem like great quality. But personally, I love their designs on the meeples and they have a lot of charm to them. Like you said, it'd be great to see this as a trend (and my guess is that it will).
