Board Games Head-To-Head

Supporter

Trent and I always like to try new things when it comes to YouTube content, and we've been wanting to take a stab at making comparison videos, where we pit two or more games against each other. The point won't be to beat up one game over the other but to give our take on the pros and cons between two or more games that fill a similar category.

With that said, which popular games are often compared against one another? Here are some that I can think of:

Shocked you didn't include #Chess vs #War Chest as your chess-like abstract lol

lol, War Chest is much less "chess-like" than Hive is.

Great suggestions! I was thinking of #Pandemic vs. #Atlantis Rising (second edition) but Horrified would've been a good one to do if we had owned it. It's definitely the more common comparison.

And based on your suggestion, I'm thinking of doing #Gloomhaven vs. #Star Wars Imperial Assault! I'll have an excuse to get a copy of Imperial Assault when I see a good price for a used copy lol. I believe IA is often referred to as a retheme of Descent too

Ooo nice! And yes to my understanding, IA is a Descent retheme.

I watched/read a few things in the #Kemet vs #Inis vs #Cyclades and I don't recall anyone not picking #Inis (which incidentally caused it to be the most interesting to me, among other reasons).

If you've played both then I would love to see your take on War of the ring vs Star wars rebellion

I've played neither, unfortunately. I've only played a couple of games in this list lol

Supporter55 days ago

very good list, specially interesting is the last one, matagot games!

Yep those are games I'd love to try. Especially #Inis!

This will be fun!

Creaking Shelves does this on their youtube channel.

I'd like you to mention cost, playtime, and player count, as that make a big diiference sometimes.

Supporter55 days ago

Yes. Not quite sure how we'll take the format but those are all good points to consider for comparison! Thanks for the channel mention. I'll check them out for some inspiration :)

I wouldn't mind seeing the following:

#Downforce vs #Rallyman: GT

#Just One vs #Codenames

#The Mind vs #Hanabi

Supporter55 days ago

Just One vs. Codenames! Completely forgot about those. For most of the comparisons, we'll need to play some of them or even buy them. But we've both played Just One and Codenames so that works

Those are some good ones! #The Mind and #Hanabi definitely fall into the same camp for me as games my fiance hates :)

I watched all kinds of videos for #Raiders of the North Sea and #Architects of the West Kingdom tyring to decide between the two. Ended up getting both :)

Some other match-ups I've known people to compare are:

Ohhh yes, these are very common comparisons. I'd love to try out Isle of Cats and Barenpark too. Both used to be in my wishlist but I just never made the purchase

I went with Cats over Barenpark due to theme and its various play modes (can't offer playing feedback yet because of 2020 life [nope, haven't tried solo yet either])... Although, Barenpark still looks very interesting and gets a lot of praise, so this could make the "to purchase" list in the future... So, for me, on this particular pair, it might turn out to have been a comparison for the sake of "which one to buy first?" rather than an either-or situation, which happens.

Played #The Isle of Cats on Saturday with a friend who had never played but has a large collection (400+ games) and he thought it was pretty similar to #Bunny Kingdom as far as the card drafting and different scoring options.

Supporter55 days ago

Ah yes, the co-op giants. And honeslty, I'd love to play all four of these games. They've all been on my wishlist at some point. We have a copy of Paladins at the office and I really need to break it out

You need to break that out my friend. One of the best solo experiences out there in my opinion and a well balanced multiplayer with somewhat limited catch-up.

Move to Texas. I'll help you play.

Supporter55 days ago

Yup, I've definitely come across this one before too! And I think I know which one you'd give the edge to? :D

I think you do too haha

I like all of the suggestion I see, but every now and then I'd to see something different. Like comparing the top Star Wars games (even though the mechanics may  be different) to see which feels more StarWarsy? Star Wars-ish?

Compare the top ranked games by different designers. Compare the best and worst version of Pandemic to each other.

This sounds like a fun idea too. Of course you'd have to go by rank because if you ask people to go with what they consider the best (or worst in the case of Pandemic) you'd get a lot of different opinions I'd imagine. I'm envisioning something like#The Castles of Burgundy vs#Macao for a Stefan Feld battle lol
