Latest addition to my collection - Tapestry

First of all, I still haven't broken my resolve. I recently got three new games and vowed not to buy another game (unless..... #Camel Up (second edition) gets reprinted... or #Fort seems really good... or if I see #PARKS below $35... or if I see #The Gallerist at 50% off lol) and that still remains unbroken.

Well @trentellingsen and I pre-ordered Tapestry a while back so that Trent could make a review video. But we ended up getting another copy for a great deal so I ended up taking this copy home!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to trying this out and forming my own opinions on it. My guess is that I'll end up agreeing with a lot of the criticisms behind the game, but still have fun playing it with my wife. I think I'll try looking through the rules tonight and tackling the Automa!

Nice! The production on this game looks cool, but the gameplay seems a little fiddly/not focused. I am interested to hear about your experience!

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Stonemaier production definitely spoils a gamer. I always can't help but compare some games to SM games if they're in a similar price range and "size" of game. Will share my full impressions once I get in a solid game with my wife! :)

Interesting, Automa first? I don't like playing solo before I've played multiplayer. Although it does make sense to try to learn the rules and things yourself before teaching it to someone else. I guess I never considered doing it that way, but I'm usually so excited to playing a new game with my wife that I'll just want to get it out with her first thing.

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I wanted to get a solid grasp of the gameflow while my wife was out! Unless it's a simple game, I like to dive into it a bit so that the session with my wife will run more smoothly.

But... after going through the rules and trying out a few turns myself, I realized doing an Automa would be too much. I was already having trouble keeping up with all of the different icons haha. I don't think there will be a need to do another solo session (whether it's with Automa or not) and I should be able to explain it very simply to her.

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Nice! So it sounds like once you understand it it's pretty straightforward to play?

trentellingsen Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Did you play the Automa? How was it?

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Ended up just going through the turn structure and played 4-5 turns or so. It was already a lot to swallow for iconography haha. On top of that, the Automa rules were understably more complex/long read compared to games like #Viticulture: Essential Edition where it's super simple to run and need very little explanation.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

Did you watch Rhados playthrough? I think you could pick up a lot from that.

philryuh Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

I didn't, and I almost always do! I actually watched it last night and thought it would've made made everything a lot easier haha. The Automatic looked simple to run as well.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yep, almost automatic in fact....

Lol

Did you notice that you wrote automatic?

philryuh Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

That's what I get for responding through mobile for once xD (I'm usually responding through my computer at my full time job)

Marshwiggle92 Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yep. Most of my posting is in mobile. I notice a lot fewer mistakes when I'm on my pc.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

So, how excited are you to try it?

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Not sure yet honestly. It actually took me trying out 4-5 turns myself (without Automa) to fully understand the game. It was a bit hazy but the the big picture makes sense now and I see its potential to be a great game. But, I have one main reservation/doubt on how well it will do for us--it seems to be low in player interaction, which is only exacerbated by it being a longer game (if not the longest out of all of our games) and that there will usually be a delay between when the players finish a game.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Well, I'm still looking forward to your report.

BenjaminK 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Looking forward to seeing how the automa plays. I've only played Tapestry once, but I really liked it, and I didn't find the factions to be unbalanced at all. But, then again, there were only four in play and that was just one time. :)

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I thought it was going to be super simple to get into, but it took me time to understand the turn structure and the iconography, so no go on the Automa last night xD

How did you feel about the player interaction in this one? Does it seem low or decent? For example, I like Wingspan despite its relatively low player interaction because it's short, satisfying, and doesn't overstay its welcome. I'm curious whether Tapestry might feel too long while feeling too solitaire-like for me and my wife.

BenjaminK 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Since our play was shortly after it released, it's a bit difficult to answer accurately. From what I recall, there wasn't a lot of player interaction. I remember some things affecting players, but not enough for a solid memory. Wish I could help more with that!

sdirrane Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

The more I looked into it the more I realized the player interaction would be very low.  One of a few reasons I was turned off from it.

WadeB1977 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have not tackled the automa as of yet.  I also haven't had a chance to play with the starting civ corrections.  I'm anxious to see your automa review!

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Hopefully next week!! :D

Although two completely different games, how do you feel about this vs. #Wingspan?

WadeB1977 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Game to game I like Wingspan but they are completely different types of games.  That being said I'm not prone to Civilization games and I Iike Tapestry from that perspective.  I don't think I have any other game quite like Tapestry as it is quite unique in its own right.  Takes up a lot of space though and I can only break it out now and then.

Skurvy5 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I’ll be interested in your review too! I wonder how good it could be as a solo game, considering much of the criticism seems to be that certain factions are just flat out unbalanced... but that wouldn’t matter as much for a solo game.

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I had that same exact thought before playing the game, and my current guess is that will be true. I'm still looking forward to the first session with my wife though. I've definitely only scratched the surface so I'm curious how it will unfold.

sdirrane Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I'll be glad to see your review.

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Hopefully next week! I'm actually more excited about Clans and Atlantis Rising (and Architects too, to be honest) lol

sdirrane Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Actually you’re right.  Since I’ve played Clans and really like it I’m far more interested in how that goes for you.

philryuh Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

Just opened Clans. First thought--I need to buy an insert!!

Edit: I'm currently looking at these two. Let me know if you have any suggestions on which I should go with :)

sdirrane Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have the insert from Tower Rex.  It is a tight fit (although I think that's almost impossible to avoid with Clans).  One thing I've seen from many is that the box just isn't big enough.

That other one looks really nice too.  It didn't come up when I was searching for one.  I may have gone with the 2nd one but I can't actually say how it is.  But yeah first game ever I felt I needed an insert and I love it.

philryuh Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

Got it, will have to think about it a bit more but it sure seems like an insert will enhance the experience. It was way too much opening closing baggies yesterday lol (I tried doing a single round without going into specifics on the solo mode)

By the way, what do you think of this? A must, it would help, or not needed? (it probably won't fit in the box either) https://www.etsy.com/listing/630484645/4-overlays-with-backboard-for-the-clans

sdirrane Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

I mean it's cool, but my mindset is I only get something extra if I think it will make gameplay much better.  That's why I got the insert.  I enjoy Clans more with quick set up and tear down because without an insert it was a chore.

I don't feel that the overlay would make me say, wow this is so much better now.  You know?

philryuh Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

I was thinking the same too. Insert = MUST vs. overlay = accessory. By the way, I have a feeling that Clans will end up beating out Marco Polo in getting to the table most of the time. There are several similarities between the two:

  • Variable player powers
  • Relatively quick gameplay (hour or less)
  • Contract fulfillment
  • Turn structure - you choose one out of a variety of options that you can repeat in a round but only once per turn
  • Game ends after 5 rounds
  • Clans has end of round goals vs. MP has end of game goals

The main differences are that Clans has the dynamic market and network/route building vs. MP has dice worker placement/manipulation and point-to-point movement. I feel like they both definitely have a place in a collection but Clans seems to have a much more rewarding/satisfying feel. And oh man, I tried out a few rounds myself last night and it's so simple but deep!

sdirrane Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

Also, I'm glad to hear that and to hear it beats out Marco Polo for you.  Sounds like I don't need to be tempted by Marco Polo (at least not in 2020 haha).

philryuh Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

I think it might have been a different story if I had owned MP II, which is supposed to encourage the traveling aspect of the game (and likely makes it feel more rewarding toward the end).

sdirrane Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

That makes sense and seems like traveling would be a big part of tying it to the theme.

sdirrane Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

Great way to put it, I think that's one of the major strong suits.  There is a lot to think about and a lot of options but it's not terribly hard to learn.  I wonder how BGG complexity rating is set.  Like is it rules or strategy or both?  If it's just rules I'm surprised to see Clans as high as it is.

philryuh Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yeah, I feel like it's somewhat similar to Root where you're making relatively simple actions within a deep decision space.

As for the complexity ratings, we really need to make that addition onto our game pages!! (rules vs. strategy complexity)

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Amen, I would love to have two ways to rate it.

How hard are the rules.....

And,

How much emergent complexity is there.

sdirrane Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

That would be really cool.  It'd be a nice way to see what you're looking for.  I think sometimes a game can have relatively easy rules and still be extremely complex.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

It's so beautiful. I will be curious to hear your thoughts on it.

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

It looks way better in person than from seeing a picture. I thought it looked like an odd mashup of different elements, but it works!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Jamey does a super good job with making iconography etc... work

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Indeed. He's spoiled me on a lot of games for that. Can't help but judge other games especially on the production side too.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I know, he makes it look so easy to have steller games in terms of production and icon design.

Sliddell11 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Dang! I knew someone around here was going to pull the trigger on this one! J look forward to hearing your thoughts and seeing some pictures!!

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Hopefully we'll be able to squeeze this in next week! It'll be tough because there are three shiny new games coming that I can't wait to try out :)
