Latest addition to my collection - Tapestry

Supporter

First of all, I still haven't broken my resolve. I recently got three new games and vowed not to buy another game (unless..... #Camel Up (second edition) gets reprinted... or #Fort seems really good... or if I see #PARKS below $35... or if I see #The Gallerist at 50% off lol) and that still remains unbroken.

Well @trentellingsen and I pre-ordered Tapestry a while back so that Trent could make a review video. But we ended up getting another copy for a great deal so I ended up taking this copy home!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to trying this out and forming my own opinions on it. My guess is that I'll end up agreeing with a lot of the criticisms behind the game, but still have fun playing it with my wife. I think I'll try looking through the rules tonight and tackling the Automa!

Nice! The production on this game looks cool, but the gameplay seems a little fiddly/not focused. I am interested to hear about your experience!

Stonemaier production definitely spoils a gamer. I always can't help but compare some games to SM games if they're in a similar price range and "size" of game. Will share my full impressions once I get in a solid game with my wife! :)

Interesting, Automa first? I don't like playing solo before I've played multiplayer. Although it does make sense to try to learn the rules and things yourself before teaching it to someone else. I guess I never considered doing it that way, but I'm usually so excited to playing a new game with my wife that I'll just want to get it out with her first thing.

I wanted to get a solid grasp of the gameflow while my wife was out! Unless it's a simple game, I like to dive into it a bit so that the session with my wife will run more smoothly.

But... after going through the rules and trying out a few turns myself, I realized doing an Automa would be too much. I was already having trouble keeping up with all of the different icons haha. I don't think there will be a need to do another solo session (whether it's with Automa or not) and I should be able to explain it very simply to her.

Nice! So it sounds like once you understand it it's pretty straightforward to play?

Supporter9 months ago

Did you play the Automa? How was it?

Supporter9 months ago

Ended up just going through the turn structure and played 4-5 turns or so. It was already a lot to swallow for iconography haha. On top of that, the Automa rules were understably more complex/long read compared to games like #Viticulture: Essential Edition where it's super simple to run and need very little explanation.

Did you watch Rhados playthrough? I think you could pick up a lot from that.

Supporter9 months ago

I didn't, and I almost always do! I actually watched it last night and thought it would've made made everything a lot easier haha. The Automatic looked simple to run as well.

Supporter9 months ago

Yep, almost automatic in fact....

Lol

Did you notice that you wrote automatic?

Supporter9 months ago

That's what I get for responding through mobile for once xD (I'm usually responding through my computer at my full time job)

Supporter9 months ago

Yep. Most of my posting is in mobile. I notice a lot fewer mistakes when I'm on my pc.

Supporter9 months ago

So, how excited are you to try it?

Supporter9 months ago

Not sure yet honestly. It actually took me trying out 4-5 turns myself (without Automa) to fully understand the game. It was a bit hazy but the the big picture makes sense now and I see its potential to be a great game. But, I have one main reservation/doubt on how well it will do for us--it seems to be low in player interaction, which is only exacerbated by it being a longer game (if not the longest out of all of our games) and that there will usually be a delay between when the players finish a game.

Supporter9 months ago

Well, I'm still looking forward to your report.

Looking forward to seeing how the automa plays. I've only played Tapestry once, but I really liked it, and I didn't find the factions to be unbalanced at all. But, then again, there were only four in play and that was just one time. :)

Supporter9 months ago

I thought it was going to be super simple to get into, but it took me time to understand the turn structure and the iconography, so no go on the Automa last night xD

How did you feel about the player interaction in this one? Does it seem low or decent? For example, I like Wingspan despite its relatively low player interaction because it's short, satisfying, and doesn't overstay its welcome. I'm curious whether Tapestry might feel too long while feeling too solitaire-like for me and my wife.

Since our play was shortly after it released, it's a bit difficult to answer accurately. From what I recall, there wasn't a lot of player interaction. I remember some things affecting players, but not enough for a solid memory. Wish I could help more with that!

The more I looked into it the more I realized the player interaction would be very low.  One of a few reasons I was turned off from it.

I have not tackled the automa as of yet.  I also haven't had a chance to play with the starting civ corrections.  I'm anxious to see your automa review!

Supporter9 months ago

Hopefully next week!! :D

Although two completely different games, how do you feel about this vs. #Wingspan?

Game to game I like Wingspan but they are completely different types of games.  That being said I'm not prone to Civilization games and I Iike Tapestry from that perspective.  I don't think I have any other game quite like Tapestry as it is quite unique in its own right.  Takes up a lot of space though and I can only break it out now and then.

I’ll be interested in your review too! I wonder how good it could be as a solo game, considering much of the criticism seems to be that certain factions are just flat out unbalanced... but that wouldn’t matter as much for a solo game.

Supporter9 months ago

I had that same exact thought before playing the game, and my current guess is that will be true. I'm still looking forward to the first session with my wife though. I've definitely only scratched the surface so I'm curious how it will unfold.

Supporter9 months ago

I'll be glad to see your review.

Hopefully next week! I'm actually more excited about Clans and Atlantis Rising (and Architects too, to be honest) lol

Supporter9 months ago

Actually you’re right.  Since I’ve played Clans and really like it I’m far more interested in how that goes for you.

Supporter9 months ago

Just opened Clans. First thought--I need to buy an insert!!

Edit: I'm currently looking at these two. Let me know if you have any suggestions on which I should go with :)

I have the insert from Tower Rex.  It is a tight fit (although I think that's almost impossible to avoid with Clans).  One thing I've seen from many is that the box just isn't big enough.

That other one looks really nice too.  It didn't come up when I was searching for one.  I may have gone with the 2nd one but I can't actually say how it is.  But yeah first game ever I felt I needed an insert and I love it.

Supporter9 months ago

Got it, will have to think about it a bit more but it sure seems like an insert will enhance the experience. It was way too much opening closing baggies yesterday lol (I tried doing a single round without going into specifics on the solo mode)

By the way, what do you think of this? A must, it would help, or not needed? (it probably won't fit in the box either) https://www.etsy.com/listing/630484645/4-overlays-with-backboard-for-the-clans
