The Mogul Scale (for rating the difficulty of board games) | BoardGameGeek

I've been thinking a lot of weight in board games, and wishing there were a better way to quantify it. And, I have been wishing that BGA could have a weight rating for games. Then, I ran across this post on BGG. I haven't listened to the podcast in question, though I plan to. But, I did think that their idea was fairly elegant. Thought I would throw it out for ya'll to check out.

I love this idea... but I agree we need a more concrete way to tell rather than having people vote for what level of each it is like BGG does.... but this starts to get closer to what I need to know before picking up / buying a game...

OK, this is going to be on my mind the rest of the day, because the world of board gaming needs this... this should be on the side of of the box right next to number of players and time it takes to ply.

I do think if you had a quantified system, like this, than having each person giving their opinions and averaging them out would work well.

@trentellingsen will be adding in a way for us to input complexity ratings on game pages hopefully this week. You'll be able to specify a separate rating for rules vs. gameplay. The overall complexity rating based on those two numbers will be what's visible for now but you'll be able to see the separate ratings if you hover over it. That's the idea for now for the starting point, but it will certainly need work and will get tailored as we get feedback from you all.

That is awesome news. I am looking forward to starting to rank games and seeing games ranked by weight.

Interesting. The problem with weight is that it’s largely subjective. Remember a few months back when I was trying to establish baselines for weight and we couldn’t even agree on a 1 or a 5?

Of course it is subjective. That is the nature of ratings. And, it is why you need to crowdsource them and average the results.

The nice thing about this one is it is significantly more defined than the BGG rating, and, it also gives me what I'm looking for. If I'm my for deep games, it defines them. If I'm looking for complex games, defines then.

Thats a good start. If you are going to use a system it should at least have a definition

Lets get the collective gamer geek think tank on this.... fire it up and lets see what we can come up with as a group...
