Solo Board Games - Which hooked you in?

Owner

I just finished sending Liz Davidson of Beyond Solitaire (and contributor to The Dice Tower Network) my interview questions! She's an avid solo gamer and was featured on The Dice Tower's Top 10 Solo Games video.

With that in mind, I had a question. It feels like most solo gamers don't start out as a solo gamer, but go through a certain "transition". How did you get into it and which game hooked you in?

#Clans of Caledonia for me. I usually avoid "beat your score" types, but it's challenging and can't ever go past the "rookie" score. It offers plenty of great tactile experience and the theme is so soothing. While I'm still not an avid solo gamer, it opened my eyes to its potential. Plus, it was one of those games that I immediately saw my wife's eyes light up after a few turns, and I always hold those games in high regard!

For me it was #Scythe  Scythe was the first game I stumbled on that I even knew had a solo mode.  I had a feeling I might need to be able to play games solo every once in a while and Scythe looked really good both multiplayer and solo.

It's funny you say that about #Clans of Caledonia solo "beat your score" because I felt the same way, but it doesn't bother me because the experience does a really good job simulating multiplayer.

Yeah, I like how minimal the additional rules are for the solo mode. The game gets out of the way for you and you can just let loose and enjoy the usual fun of Clans but without needing to wait for someone. I like that I can continue my stream of thought without interruption.

Trent and I have been working in the office together lately and he's mentioned several times about Scythe, but that he's pretty sure he won't be getting to it anytime soon haha (not until he gets out of the swamp of having two kids!)

By the time he gets out of that swamp he will probably have a third! My youngest is almost 3.5 and the swamp is still very thick.

One of the first games I played solo, as far as I can recall, was #Fuse. I played this solo mostly because my wife can't stand it haha The ten-minute stress fest hooked me, and I started experimenting with other quick solo games. #Sprawlopolis was one of them; I got to review it and ended up hooked. #Terraforming Mars was next, and by then I was long gone.

I'm pretty sure I'd agree with your wife if I ever played that game lol

Maybe I should try the PnP version of #Sprawlopolis some day... I think I saw SUSD cover it on one of their videos.

Honestly the PnP will be just as good as the actual version. That's one of the great things about Button Shy--they're just 18 cards! So you might as well give it a try. It's very good.

#Terraforming Mars was actually my first solo game that really drew me in. I have since moved on and in my opinion upgraded to #Gaia Project for this. TM had the beat your score mechanic, but you also had to make sure you could meet all of the global parameters so that was nice, but GP has a really neat AI player that is very challenging, so you are always keeping track of your best scores, but the ultimate goal is to beat that AI! It really is a soothing process to solo game especially when you have a cup of coffee, a slow afternoon and the only thing you dive into is the game.

I would also love to mention #Welcome to... and #Sprawlopolis, these are my go to travel solo games. Very fun and puzzly and easy to transport!

I've been hearing that @Skurvy5 has been really enjoying his sessions of #Gaia Project!

Yes!! I am so happy to hear! What is your favorite faction?

Supporter6 months ago

Only tried 2 so far - the birds and the one that gets knowledge for settling new worlds. Much prefer the birds so far.

Ahhhh yes the space chickens, allllll about the money.

I bring Sprawlopolis everywhere when I travel. It is so good! I've even played it on those airplane trays haha Butt dang it is a fantastic game!

It is so good! I still have yet to come close to winning lol. I tend to focus in too much on 2 of the 3 objectives and get owned lol.

Yeah, it can be pretty tough. It's one of my most-played games, and while I have won quite a few times, it was only by the skin of my teeth. It's that third objective that gets me every time! Too much to think about haha

It is that last objective and the streets....those streets that cause negative points!

I got into solo gaming primarily because my wife said I never used any of my board game collection. She was mostly right so I started playing solo to prove her wrong. Turns out most of my collection was great for solo gaming and I haven’t looked back! Now I actively seek out games just to play solo.

I’m so excited that you interviewed her. It’s going to be great!

Haha, holy smokes, I should have posted my #Clans of Caledonia comment here but I didn't see it yet.  So good solo.
