Poll ends in now

Just curious about everyone's traditions. Do you decorate for Christmas? Do you listen to Christmas songs? When do you start? Is there such a thing as too soon?

My wife is BIG on Christmas decorations/songs. Most of her sentimental values toward the holiday comes from her life in Michigan after coming to the U.S.--beautiful white Christmas scenes from movies basically, and also why she likes Home Alone. That's why when she finally got a place of her own to decorate after we got married, she went crazy getting $100's worth of decorations and started decorating our apartment for Christmas during Halloween (our plastic tree stayed from Halloween till some time in January). She toned it down a lot over our past 5 years of marriage but her love for this holiday remains strong--and this year, we're living in a condo that has a fireplace so even more thematic elements to work with! In the end, it's great having my wife who enjoys the festivities since without her, I'm sure I'd be stuck in the most plain looking room haha

“Other.” Usually right after Thanksgiving, but this year we started decorating the week of Thanksgiving. We’ll be out of town this winter, so we wanted to give ourselves time to enjoy the decorations.

I voted for “other”. We usually get everything set up the evening of Thanksgiving and then into Black Friday.

I do typically get the lights up on our house earlier because it can be challenging with snow and bitter cold if you wait too long to do it.

Christmas season is so short and there is so much to do and enjoy. We love Christmas music. I always look forward to when they change the Muzak at work to the Christmas songs.

Since I am such a huge nerd I enjoy singing and listening to the traditional German Christmas carols. I took German in middle school and all the way into college. Nothing beats a good rendition of Stille Nacht!

We're singing Stille Nacht for our church's Christmas program/fireside this Saturday. I love the way the German sounds. I love the song in English, but it's even better in German. There's something about singing in a different language that's super cool.

Love the German version!

Indeed! Plus you get to hear how the original author intended the song to sound. We’ve done a decent job of translation but you can’t beat the original.

When do I start or when does Everyone around me start? haha

Personally, I live in a dorm and am not a fan of Christmas music so my answer would be "I don't" (other, i suppose), but I voted for what everyone else around me does: if the calendar says "december" you better have the decorations up and the music playing.

Lol I can picture how you're feeling about all this. How many people do you live with in the dorm? Any times you've played board games with them?

I have one roommate but theres a lot of people in the dorm. we play a lot of board games: group games and/or dnd once a week usually!

I miss those days. My roommate and I played WoW. This was back in 20052006 when the game was new. We had so much fun.

As a teacher Thanksgiving Break is the beginning of the end of the first half of the school year.  We only have about 13-15 teaching days before our Christmas break and those are filled with extra did, field trips, school Mass and half days.  So I always start listening to Christmas music during Thanking Break.  I also exclusively listen to Christmas Music until Jan 6th.  (Good thing I have about 6-7 different Christmas Spotify playlists).

As a family we decorate the first Sunday of Advent to use that time to prepare and wait.

I love the season of Advent. Such a joyous season.

Supporter8 months ago

Totally.  My family also tries to use it as a season to slow down.  It goes by quick.  I love blending together Christian Advent and secular holiday things.  I really enjoy having my family find God in those things that aren't directly or strictly about Him.  Where is He hidden in the great things we do.

Sounds like you have a nice routine! :)

Do you ever end up having to grade papers during Thanksgiving break?

Supporter8 months ago

I try to do my best to plan my grading time into my school schedule but I usually have to do a bit.  Christmas break usually has one day eaten up with grading though.

ASAP after Halloween. This year was November 2. Being Canadian, I didn't grow up with Thanksgiving in November, so there was never that concern over overtaking holidays haha Plus, I love Christmas decorations, and starting in December means less time to have it all up.

I also love Christmas music and will listen to it year-round, off and on. I know, I know...I'm a monster :)

Supporter8 months ago

This is a tad early sir. Don’t you think you are hurting Thanksgiving’s feelings by focusing too much on Christmas?

Nah. I'm thankful for Christmas, so it checks out. Plus, we don't skip over Thanksgiving. We just...doubly celebrate :)

Supporter8 months ago

Lol. Sounds like a plan.

Supporter8 months ago

Hahahaha I'm sure my wife would like me to be more like you Ben and join in on her fun

We are open advocates of that way of life. I'd be happy to show you the ropes haha

Supporter8 months ago

Haha.  Your not a monster.  But I do try to keep Christmas Music in Christmas Season to keep it extremely special and tied to that time of the year.

Supporter8 months ago

I too love Christmas music, and there is some that I will listen to year round. But, mostly I try to keep it to the Christmas season to keep it more special.

Supporter8 months ago

Yeah. Keeping Christmas music in the Christmas season just helps the entire time feel magical and special.

ALSO, Jingle Bells was originally a Thanksgiving song, so I feel justified in my decision hahaha

I listen to it a lot more during the Christmas season, but there will be a week here or a day there throughout the year that I'm compelled to listen to Christmas music. I also very much prefer the traditional pieces (such as In the Bleak Midwinter, Silent Night, etc.) as opposed to the more modern "classics" (i.e. Jingle Bells). Still, I like it all, but some more so than others :)

Supporter8 months ago

I love it all, which is why I have about 7 different Christmas play lists on Spotify.

Seven! haha Very nice! That's the spirit! :)

Supporter8 months ago

When you're listening all the time you gotta mix it up.  Classic Holiday Songs, Advent Songs, Traditional Hymns, as a punk rock kid I also have a Punk list, and an Indie Rock list.  I also listen follow a Navidad a la Mexicana play list of Spotify.   I love embracing other cultures traditions of Christmas as well.

I would be most interested in this punk list of yours. Link? I love a good punk cover (in fact, I'm listening to a punk cover playlist on Spotify AT THIS VERY MOMENT).

Supporter8 months ago

It's actually the "Punk Christmas" playlist put together by Spotify that I listen to.

Found it. Gonna give this playlist a thorough listen!

Supporter8 months ago

Nice, enjoy.  Of course there are some big hits but also some big misses.

Supporter8 months ago

Yes. Traditional carols over the secular ones for sure. There is of course only one true reason for the season.

Agreed. Which is why I prefer traditional carols. They know what's up :)

Supporter8 months ago

Nice, I can understand that.  I use it as one of many things to prepare for Christmas.

Supporter8 months ago

I am usually not all that into decorating. But we do put up a few decorations 2ish weeks before Christmas. I will listen to Christmas music around the first of Dec.

Supporter8 months ago

What is the weather like there around this time of the year?

Supporter8 months ago

Highs in the 80s lows in the low 60s maybe upper 50s. Beautiful blue sunshiny days. No chance of me needing to shovel snow. For this I am extremely grateful.

Rainy season ended about a month ago, so no humidity.

One thing about here is that poinsettias aren't just a house plant that people have at Christmas time. They are veritable trees down here. I regularly see them 15-20+ ft tall.

Supporter8 months ago

Wow that’s crazy!

Supporter8 months ago

I would say that it's awesome.

Crazy awesome!
