@BenjaminK could you remind me again if Champions of Midgard is good for two players? Also, is Valhalla a must?

My wife and I really enjoy it at two players. In fact, I almost prefer it at two because there's so much more to do haha It's great at all player counts, to be honest (if only there was a solo variant...). Valhalla isn't necessary for a great game, but it does make a great game even greater (i.e. helps mitigate the luck factor).

Awesome, thanks! I'm still deciding whether I should go with Everdell or CoM first after we get in some plays with Tuscany. Then again, it might depend on whichever drops in price first :)

Price always comes first haha Never played Everdell, so I can't speak to that, but CoM is one of my favorites and I'll always say yes to playing. It's the combat I love; the risk vs. reward gets my blood pumping! haha

Tzolk'in - I've been looking at this game for a few days trying to see if it will be a good fit for me and my wife.Viticulture has been a hit for us and while I have safe picks like Everdell and Champions of Midgard, I've been interested in Tzolk'in for a future purchase since it adds a dimension of time into the worker placement genre.
What do you think about this game? Do you think it'll be a good game for us? Is it pretty dry and mostly just optimizing points or is it thematically engaging as well?

I would love to see the main wheel painted by you Phil! I know you have that artsy side!

Hahaha it's incredible what some people do with those gears. My wife is very artistic as well so maybe it could be a project for us if we ever get the game :)

I’ve been thinking of Tzolk'in and Champions a lot as well!
Tzolk'in Seems all around good from mechanics to theme, but I haven’t done a ton of research on it to know 100%.

I enjoy it quite a bit, but I don't think it's theme forward. There are 3 main strategies that work, which can make it feel kind of "spreadsheety". It's all about optimizing the resources you get on the wheels and knowing when to wait or pull your workers.

That's the impression I got after looking at some of the videos. Sure seems interesting but I have a feeling it'll become way more about strategizing than actually having fun for the two of us.

Arkham horror the card game.
Great theme, art, strategy, base set, price, price of expansions
con: setup sucks

The Mind is a great small box game for low $. Better with more players but still good for 2. Jaipur is perhaps my favorite 2 player small box game.

Jaipur is fantastic and I really should add it to my collection, I've played a bunch on Board Game Arena.

100% coop and you can play with as many players as you want. The more you have the harder it is.

Favorite small box game for 2 players? I'm always on the lookout for games my wife will enjoy and that we can take to coffee shops.

Kingdomino is up to 4 but is a small box that is fun for two players
dragonwood is also good

I think the 2 player variant for Kingdomino is one of the best 2 player games out there. The game as a whole is in my top 10.
Sliddell11 13 months ago
Definitely! I like how you can vary it a bit from the standard game with the 7x7. Have you played the expansion for it? That is one I would consider getting since my wife loves the game
disom 13 months ago
I haven't played the expansion and have been holding off because it adds some Take That which I know my wife and game group won't really enjoy. I'm happy with the base game just the way it is.
Sliddell11 13 months ago
That’s good to know. I think the only way I would get it is if it went on a great sale

My favorite game for 2 is Star Realms. It's all deckbuilding and attacking one another.
I also love Biblios. It's card drafting and set collection with an auction in the second half of the game.
I always have a copy of Circle the Wagons in the car. Spatial town building in 18 cards.
The Fox in the Forest is an excellent trick taking game for two.

I've been looking at Biblios. Could you describe how it feels to play?
I love Fox in the Forest! Unfortunately my wife does not, haha.

Yep, trick taking for 2, a rarity in that mechanic. My wife and I were playtesters, so it's got a special place in my heart.

I would also recommend 51st State. Such a great game with fun mechanics, components, and theme.
