Scythe: One Man’s Mediocre Storage Solution

Scythe is a fantastic game with amazing components, beautiful art, and a huge footprint.

The game becomes even more amazing as you add expansions to the base set. I currently own the Invaders from Afar expansion which adds 2 factions to the starting 5.

I also own (and have completed) the Rise of Fenris expansion which adds a whole host of new modules and other items to the base game.

(I’ll try to keep this spoiler free)

One thing that becomes less amazing about the game as you add in expansions is a storage solution. Fortunately, the core game box is oversized and the components are over packaged.

My mediocre storage solution is actually pretty simple - I just took all the components, put them each in their own plastic bags, and then chucked the plastic miniature storage containers into the bin.

I then carefully pack the box so that nothing will be damaged, so that the lid closes completely, and that nothing will shift when I store the box vertically.

The base box has tons of space without the stock insert taking up all kinds of space. I don’t yet have the Wind Gambit expansion but I could easily fit the airships inside with this storage solution.

Sorry that this picture is sideways. I blame BenK. Anyway, here you see Scythe, all packed up and ready for storage.

This is how everything packs into the box. Notice how each faction has all of their components- miniatures and all - in one easy to unpack plastic bag. I actually acquired all of these bags from Scythe and the Rise of Fenris expansion. I didn’t need to spend a dime for this storage solution. (Well I did need to buy the games).

Removing the faction bags exposes the other components for the game, each in their own individual bags.

A few more baggies removed and you can see some of the flat components.

And here is everything out of the box. Super organized, easy to unpack and put away, and totally free!

Definitely a mediocre storage solution if I’ve ever seen one.

Thanks for reading!

Another thing I thought while looking at this was that it is great to have a system, but not so great when people try to help you recreate it. I appreciate the help in organizing, but I’d just rather do it myself so I can actually close the box haha

I believe you deserve a round of applause 👏

Well that’s very nice. Thank you sir!

Haha of course! I appreciate the systems of organization one puts into a board game box.

hahaha My inability to upload images seems to be rubbing off! haha

Thanks for posting this! Always nice to see how a lot of stuff can be stored conservatively. I like to put all components of the same color in the same bag as well. Makes setup a lot easier.

I've consolidated a few games this way. Baggies sure do make it easier, and it's a heck of a lot cheaper!

Do you have any idea what that box weighs?

Supporter11 months ago

I’m sorry, I don’t. I’m not very good at estimating weight.

No biggie

Great pictures! That seems like a very practical solution.

And I might have missed it, but what did you do with the boxes for the expansions?

Darn... BenK strikes again lol (@BenjaminK)

Theoretically I could throw the expansion boxes away. But they are so beautiful and well made that I couldn’t bring myself to do it. So they are stuffed in a corner of my game shelf somewhere.

Cut the tops of and frame them.

Or I could just keep them in a dark corner of my game storage area.

Supporter10 months ago

That would be edifying.

I understand, I'd have a tough time throwing them away too

Well done with the pics.  I got the Legendary box in xmas 2018 and use that to hold everything.  I have a plastic storage container inside dividing up the pieces instead of the brokentoken storage inserts but it works and I'll that stays outside the box for now is the main board and the board extension.  I hope to get the inserts eventually as they have helped me with other games (Castles of Mad King Ludwig)

Yeah... I am loathe to buy a box for a board game. Just seems counterproductive.

Thanks for posting this, I have been thinking about picking up the expansions but don't have a lot of shelf space left. I'm all for chucking inserts and using baggies.

Supporter11 months ago

It’s amazing how much space you have in the box without using the insert.

Looking forward to reading it.
