Games you have trouble getting to the table

Owner

Do you have games in your collection that seem to take forever to get to the table? What are they and what are your reasons? What would it take to get to it?

I have 2 games that are taking the longest time to come out.

  • #Pax Pamir (Second Edition) - I know for sure my wife and I won't be playing this one together so I've been meaning to solo it. I told myself that I won't be leaving the office today until I make sure to get in a play. The biggest hurdle is going through the rules. This game is so compact and has so little footprint considering its depth, and I have a feeling that I'll like it a lot if I give it several chances.
  • #Agricola (Revised Edition) - I've watched a review. I typically have zero issue with reading through rules unless it's horribly put together. I've yet to even open up the box though. My wife and I can play games together maybe once every two weeks, so our favorite games tend to get the priority. So far, #Concordia and #Clank! Legacy: Acquisitions Incorporated are at the top and we're still wanting to give #Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion a chance. I've also been meaning to introduce #Skulk Hollow to her so that it could potentially become our favorite to play within 45 min (we typically don't play any games that play under an hour because they're too light for us. I personally find Skulk Hollow to be a meatier game that still plays fast).

#On Mars and #Lisboa are the ones that are gathering dust on the shelf so far. Sheer amount of rules and complexity makes these games problematic for anyone in my playgroup (other then me) from learning the rules and getting down to playing them.

#Star Wars: Rebellion is my absolute all-time favorite game but it’s a beast to get to the table. I typically play it once a year. But man when we play it - the experience is incredible.

Reasons that it’s tough to get to the table:

- Sprawling and lengthy game - typically takes 3-4 hours to play and it covers every available inch of my dining room table.

-2-player game - most of my nearby friends don’t have 3-4 hours to commit to a game night so I need to wait until the holidays when my friend who moved out of state comes home.

Still love this game to pieces and I wish someone could play it with me more than once per year.

I got Rebellion for my brother so we could eventually played it when I visited for the holidays. I believe we did 2 games in a span of 10 days. He hasn't played it again ever since (2 Christmas ago). The game was totally worth it for those sessions, just pure epic. We'll definitely play it again at some point but it's one of those once or twice a year games and that's totally okay.

Yep, this is the reason I haven't picked this up, and likely never will. Outer Rim is the only other Star Wars game I have much interest in, and it mostly got reviews in the range of "good but not great", so I'll be waiting for prices to drop a bit more on that one.

Ahh but it’s such a good game though. I love it so much. But a collection can only support one or two of those types of games.

I put #Star Wars: Outer Rim in the great but not amazing category. It’s a really fun game and does play great solo (Ha!) and is a really fun experience at 3-4 players also. It needs an expansion though too.

I would concur with 'good not great', although I actually think it's more a case of I wanted it to feel more 'star war-esque' and more rough and tumble on the edge of the galaxy. So I do wonder if my own expectations of what an outer-rim game should be meant I didn't enjoy it as much. If it had a different theme then maybe I would have enjoyed it more as I think it is a really enjoyable puzzle with some fun mechanics going on.

It’s a really good game. I think an expansion to flesh out some sections would really put it over the top.

For sure, the way it is designed I am sure there will be an expansion or three soon enough!

I’m honestly surprised one hasn’t even been announced yet.

Maybe they will try to coincide it with a new film/tv show they are putting out?

Mandalorian Season 2 comes out this fall. That would be the perfect opportunity.

To my shame I have had The Russian Campaign since around the time it came out (1977) and have yet to get it to the table.

It's a 2 player 6 HOUR game, so the barrier to entry is quite high.

Wow that’s impressive and looks like a really interesting game.

I traded for #Eclipse and #Imperial 2030 ages ago. I want to try both with an epic amount of players but I don’t think it is going to happen.

I've had a hard time getting #T.I.M.E. Stories to the table. Played the main scenario with a group and have never had the chance to get it back together. I bought an expansion but haven't attempt playing it since I feel for another group to get into it we'd have to play the base game again. Anyone have experience with this specific situation?

Apart from that I have a copy of #Diplomacy I've never played cause I don't want to loose friendships lol

#7 Wonders  I received it for Christmas a few years ago, and my wife and son had a hard time understanding all of the scoring mechanics as we played the game.  I won, and they've never given it another chance.  I end up playing it solo with three hands once just to play it again.  Hopefully if I can get a small game group together later this year I can play it with some people who will actually enjoy it with me.

Welcome to the forum!

Have you had better luck trying out a different game with your family?

I can get them to play #Ticket to Ride: Europe, #Century: Spice Road#Pandemic, #Sushi Go Party! and #Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle and #6 Nimmt! fairly easily.  My wife also likes #Splendor #Azul and #Alhambra. I'm always up for a game, my wife occasionally, and my son not so much. I'm hoping to get more game play with #Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale, #Istanbul: The Dice Game, and #The Quacks of Quedlinburg.

Well I definitely have games I want to buy (#Dune #Twilight Imperium 4th Edition) that I won't because of this problem.  I thankfully haven't had this problem in the past couple of years.

I would like to start getting #Scythe out more.  I'm hoping that my group (we are planning on doing two game nights a month right now) can start #Scythe: The Rise of Fenris either this week or the next time we get together and play through that for a while.

Your group will love #Scythe: The Rise of Fenris Scott. You are in for a treat.

Supporter4 months ago

Nice.  We have a couple of newbies/haven't played in a whiles so we may need to play one standard game of Scythe before starting Fenris.

Supporter4 months ago

I think you can jump right in. The first game in the campaign is pretty much a normal game.

Supporter4 months ago

Nice.  Maybe we will.

Did you get in a play of Pamir yesterday before leaving??

Owner4 months ago

I failed :(

But I did learn it all just now so I'll be able to solo it this weekend! I gotta say, the game sounds fun now that I understand it more. It definitely seems like one that will take several games for it to really sink in but I'm liking what it's about.

We were (and still are) one game from finishing #Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 when the actual pandemic struck. The plan after that was to play through #Mistfall, I played couple of games with my partner when I first got it but wanted to play with our good friend through all the missions. As such it has sat on our shelf for months without getting a play.

I really want to here how Pax goes for you.

My biggest problem right now is being physically seperated from my games.

When you say “give #Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion a chance” does that mean you are giving up on it already?!?
